President Lincoln considered Jamaica

as one of the locations for settling former slaves from america after the emancipation proclamation of 1863...

along with belize & guyana...((also a small island off haiti which some settlers actually made it to---but eventually ended up returning to america (washington d.c. area) while some relocated to haiti))...
apparently lincoln took a lot of heat when he was pushing the idea of re-settlement as many progressives of the time considered it a racist idea;
even though he claimed it was to avoid the obvious racial troubles that would undoubtedly follow the freeing of former slaves in a racialized society...

apparently the british did not allow re-settlemnt in british held colonies due to fear that they would be seen as entering the american civil war on the side of the north

yes i was a part of that discussion as well...

but i don't recall seeing most of this info in that thread...(like the british angle)

fascinating stuff;

lincoln actually sent an envoy (black man) to jamaica to investigate...

he went from j-a to belize, to guyana and returned to the u.s to drum up support for the idea;
remember there were some blacks who had already returned to africa;

some jamaicans to sierra leone..and some americans to liberia so this was not a new idea...
some 50 or 60 years after lincoln, 'baack to africa' was an idea more linked to marcus garvey
