Why is it called rice and peas when the peas are not peas? (I've been asked that before.)

That was one of my first questions to a friend over dinner years ago. Why are you calling these red beans peas? This is red beans and rice lol.

I've since learned that some people use pigeon peas or what not so I just accept it as a dish name to represent the prep method no matter which legume is used.

I'm referring to beans and peas and don't want to look up the difference between a legume and a pulse and which thing is a subset of what. So why don't you just tell me whether I meant legume or pulse?
