Re: Slave Sermons
WOOOOOOIIIEEEE!!
I went through about seven in this series of Slave Sermons.
Quite a thrashing for the black believers.
The one on women said that 70% of black church goers are women.
The one on imprinting was terrific.
I intend to go through the whole series.
This should be moved to Religion and Philosophy though.

What percentage of Jamaica's people do you think believe that such faith healing works and do you believe that the "imprinting" as featured in that first Slave Sermon works as well on the descendants of those slaves in the video?.
</div></div>
I can't give you a percentage, mate. Perhaps you should ask a churchgoer.
On your second point, there are people who seem to be obsessed with religion.

Derek,
Most churchgoers are understandably reluctant to discuss the whys and wherefores of their faith with an atheist.
Since you don't seem to be a believer I asked you as a Jamaican.
Let me ask a related question for you or anyone who would care to respond:
Do you see the widespread acceptance of Christianity by Jamaicans and by the descendants of slaves and colonized peoples in general to be a passing down of just another form of mental slavery; the acceptance of a white Jesus as master/celestial overlord who cannot be questioned ?
Until I watched that video I had never really considered it as a form of conditioning for subservience in general but it sure does seem logical AND effective.
It seems that making blind obedience to authority figures fits in well not only with the historic slave culture but as well in today's U,S, and Jamaican societies where that blind obedience in countries with very high rate of religious belief also seems to lead to blind obedience and acceptance of social and economic systems that serve the present day corporate masters and the all-powerful God-like wealthy who rule over all of us.
Your thoughts?

I believe in the Creator, or God.
I have no time for organised religion - or any belief system that I am not supposed to question.

Derek,
Sorry to have pressured you for an answer.
I misjudged you. </div></div>
No problem.
To me, God and religion are completely separate. Does God need religion?

how then do you explain tunisia, egypt, libya, bahrain, etc.
by all accounts those are very religious societies, yet they are defying authority;
jamaica's condition is less attributable to religious doctrines than it is to mass media brainwashing & school-shytstem mis-education of the majority population and political strong-arming against anyone who would dare challenge the status quo...
even bob marley was nearly killed & look how popular he was...
most jamaicans are going to believe in a higher power, even if the image of that higher power (white jesus) has been co-opted & falsified by others...
the u.s. population is also impotent due to the constant mass-media brainwashing, more so than religion---
in my opinion the majority of the u.s. population does not truly believe in 'god' as non-creation evolutionism is now widely accepted as 'the truth' in most educated circles;
