Military spending is the worst and least productive way to help an economy. The bombs, planes and other things used in war are made used and are gone.

Things like automobiles are made and continually used and then need gas, repairs, tires, cleaning and whole industries arise form that sort of production.

The only ones who benefit from arms production are those who own the production facilities.

Personally I can see a situation where the spoils of Libya are shared up amongst the countries currently carrying out military action against it,...it has vast reserves of oil,some countries are looking at it as a way of solving their current austerity problems.

Dont let them fool you about doing it for humanitarian reasons,...........there are many countries in the middle east that needs humanitarian intervention,they could start with palestine if they were all that concerned about people.

Comparing the Egyptian rebellion, Mubarak didn`t let all hell loose on those in Cairo`s square. Perhaps he couldn`t, having lost support on an apparent much larger scale than Gadhaffi.

The UN were responding to SOS no fly zone to prevent genocide in Benhazi as Gadhaffi`s troops zeroed in from Tripoli to liquidate all opposition rebels to dust and ash.

Gadaffi wasnt being nice because the rebels werent being nice either,in egypt the protesters were peaceful,they didnt posess anti-tank missiles and ak 47,s...and the protesters in egypt gathered peacefully in a tahrir square,..not take over whole major cities at the end of guns....what was gadaffi supposed to do.

The us was happy for the Jamaican government to fire on it,s own people in tivoli gardens in the pursuit of 1 single man,.....as it turned out more people probably died in tivoli than as yet in benghazi,....where was the calls for a no fly zone over kingston when the jamaican army invaded a small civilian community.

So why didnt the west just leave them to deal with their tyrant,why get involved,has no one learnt from the lessons of Iraq or afghanistan,...the west has a strong history of wading in guns blazing then when the dust is cleared find themselves surrounded by various religious factions vying for supremacy,.....this wont be any different,and todays &quot;rebels&quot; are destined to be tomorrow,s &quot;terrorists&quot;.

LOl !....so suddenly Gadaffi is a &quot;don of the desert&quot;......he wasnt a don of the desert a few weeks ago,the UK,and other western countries were happy to do business with him until so-called &quot;rebels&quot; turned up armed to the teeth claiming they are innocent citizens.
Most of these leaders who currently have armies in Libya are pictured shaking hands with gadaffi,if he was such a big don why didnt they refused to do business with him before the furore started.

Let,s wait and see the outcome of this,let us see how this desert adventure plays out,lets us see who ends up with what once the dust settles,or who is fighting who for what,
Judging by other desert adventures by western powers this one too may not have a happy ending.
There were plenty adjectives used to describe the Iraq war,at first it was because of &quot;weapons of mass destruction&quot;,then it was to &quot;liberate&quot; the people,...it even got upgraded to &quot;war on terror&quot;..........so far this &quot;operation&quot; is to &quot;stop gadaffi firing on his people and prevent a humanitarian disaster&quot;.......let us see how long before it turns into something else.

As of last Thursday when I read the Time article and subsequently Googling and reading as much about it as I could I became a Singularitarian.

I read Kurzweil's book, well it was more like a tome, The Singularity Is Near, several years ago. I thought it was interesting, but I think he is wrong. How convenient for him that the Singularity where humans achieve immortality arrives just in time for him. While I understand the concept it is a bit of wishful thinking that overestimates the speed of exponential technological growth and where we are in the cycle. Technologically speaking we are not even infants, but still in the womb and perhaps in a few hundred years if mankind has not yet wiped itself from the face of the earth or some natural disaster does not get us we will get there. But if he is right you may live to see it because according to him, incremental progress in technology will add years to human life so that even people in their 60s, as he is, will live to see it. Anyway someone should start a thread on this in one of the other forums.
