Toronto police are investigating a shooting that left a father of 10 dead in Scarborough early Monday.
The shooting happened just after 2:20 a.m. ET at G’s Chill & Grill, a bar on Eglinton Avenue East near Midland Avenue.
Police responded to a 911 call and found Cliffington Ford, a 38-year-old father of 10, dead of gunshot wounds inside the bar.
Many patrons fled the packed bar after the shooting, but some stayed and provided information, police said.
Two women who had relationships with Ford arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting and were still there hours later when they spoke to CBC News.
“He was a good man,” said Leslie Parker, a former girlfriend of Ford's and a mother of four of his children. "He always put his family first. Everything he ever did was for his kids so they had opportunities he never had."
Outside the bar, Aysha Spence, Ford’s current girlfriend and mother of two of his children, said she couldn't believe he was gone.
“We are waiting for him,” she told CBC News. “We can’t leave him here. We are waiting until he comes out, till they bring him out. We can’t leave him here.”
Ford came to Canada from Jamaica when he was in his early 20s. Police said it was too early to speculate about a motive for the killing.
Last year, Ford, was convicted of possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking. He paid a $7,500 fine and was put on probation.
Parker had a message for Ford's killer.
"Whatever problem you may have had with him or if it was an accident, you’ve taken away a father from his children. This man has 10 children.”
Police appealed to anyone at the bar at the time of the shooting to come forward.
