Can I share something with you guys?

Now what I’m about to share is a bit frightening and comforting at the same time ... but more so on the frightening side. I was just approached by the Division Chief where I work and he told me he had something to tell me and that he has never done before.

He was asked to cut his budget and they wanted him to cut his contractors (which I am). He had 7 people to cut and my name was on the list. The list was circulated among top Managers here and they all came to him (according to him 5 of them) and told him…to take me of the list. They were adamant that they cannot afford to loose me in the position. He told me whatever I am doing to keep It up and leverage that to position myself in the Bearu.

I’m a bit shaken up to tell you the truth. Number one I did have plans to leave in a year or two once I got certain things under my belt but this just made me increasingly aware that:
1 – As a contactor that they can let me go anytime (No matter the effort I put in)
2- While it seems I’m respected here, I am still at the mercy of budget cuts

I don’t know who those people are (I am sure my Branch Manger was one of them though) but I owe them a debt of gratitude for stepping in and ensuring that I was not on the chopping block.

He sure gave me some things to think about indeed.

Look - don't be shaken. Just do like brah man said - just keep doing as you've been doing.

Keep your plans in tact - do you!

Keep you 1 or 2 year plan in motion.

No one is irreplaceable - we're alllllll at the mercy of the biggah boss, budget cuts etc.

I went through something kind of similar a few years back. A company bought our existing company. They were going to completely wipe out my dept. and take over with their own. Fortunately our CEO and my manager at that time had hearts and just flat out told the whole group of the new company's plan.

We were allowed to interview at will all day every day lol. People were leaving left and right. I finally got a job offer I liked and was ready to turn in the notice when the manager from the new company called a meeting. He tried to deny that they were planning to get rid of my department. (They found out they couldn't handle the work alone and the learning curve was too great for them to have to start from scratch. Big ups for little documentation.)

I ended up staying and got a few more bones too. But it can truly happen to anybody at any time. That I have learned and like.Yuri said no one is irreplaceable.

You just keep your eyes open and notice when they come round desk-to-desk collecting surplus office supplies lol. (You want some of my extra pens and folders to go put back in the supply room?) That means trouble.

LOL Magic as yuh seh dat. I got that on my review... my boss seh mi use humor fi lightnen the mood in meetings.

Mi noh stap draw cyad pan some dem people here more time. But yuh know mi arredi ..m noh tek tings too serious an if mi cyaan run mi lickle joke den di environment is nat fi me.

heheehhe.. I like dat No wonder people don't like doing documentation around here.. guess they figure that would keep them safe.

Funny I am documenting stuff like crazy for the opposite reason.. that is ..when mi seh hasta la vista dem can pick up where mi lef off. Or maybe dat too nice

I truly appreciated him telling me though.. he didn't have to. And is not someone I interact with at all.

I'm thinking of having a one to one with my Branch Chief nex week. him not here today. Gonna have a hear to heart chat to see what comes of it. What unu tink?

Sometimes the thing about being laid off is that it really can make you question your self-worth
