TELEVISION Jamaica (TVJ) today signed a historic partnership today with American media giant CNN to be its exclusive broadcast partner in Jamaica.

The partnership will give TVJ direct access to CNN's news reports and footage.

Under the agreement the two media entities will join for daily news and breaking stories; features programming and investigative reporting.

The move was lauded by representatives from both stations.

"Jamaica represents one of the largest most important markets in the Caribbean and we are delighted," said Tony Maddox, executive vice president and managing director of CNN International.

The signing took place at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston.

TELEVISION Jamaica's Smile Jamaica and NBC's Today Show will collaborate to produce a special, unique episode that combines both programmes on March 4, TVJ announced yesterday.

"Today Show's Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, along with Smile Jamaica's Simon Crosskill, Neville Bell, Simone Clarke-Cooper and Carlette DeLeon will co-host the show which will be broadcast live on TVJ from a picturesque Jamaican location," the station said in a news release.

Segments of the show will be broadcast on the Today Show in May 2011, and the entire show will be posted on the Today Show website.

"This is the first such co-production in the history of Jamaican television," TVJ said. "It demonstrates the high standards which Television Jamaica's highly acclaimed, award-winning morning variety show consistently achieves. In the most recent public opinion survey, Smile Jamaica has 84 per cent audience share of the fiercely competitive morning television market in the greatest period of dominance for Television Jamaica.

"The Today Show dominates the ratings in America's morning news and entertainment arena, serving as the overwhelming favourite for more than 15 years.," the news release added. "Each day, Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry, Al Roker, Natalie Morales, Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb bring the Today Show tradition to millions of viewers across the USA and around the world."

Commenting on the Smile/Today collaboration, Television Jamaica's General Manager Kay Osborne, said, "TVJ's team members are justifiably proud of this special endorsement that's generating lots of excitement throughout the company. It's a tremendous opportunity to showcase our on-air talent and technical teams as we join forces with the Today Show to entertain and inform the world from right here in Jamaica."

Osborne revealed that the programme will be a positive for Brand Jamaica as it will thrust Jamaican culture and vibes onto the world stage, feature local brands and show off Jamaica's astonishing beauty.

"At TVJ, we promote aspects of Brand Jamaica every day, and the collaboration gives us a chance to share this with a much wider audience," the news release quoted Osborne. "The show will help build equity in Brand Jamaica and benefit culture and tourism interests and the manufacturing sector."

Speaking on Smile Jamaica on Monday, senior producer of the Today Show, Jennifer Long said "Kathie Lee and Hoda are excited about the show; we're all thrilled about it. This is going to be great for us."

Smile Jamaica is broadcast each weekday between 6:00 am and 8:30 am on Television Jamaica and is streamed live online at televisionjamaica.com.

I may be worng but I do<span style="font-weight: bold"> NOT </span>see this as a good thing for Jamaica.

This is just greatedr access for CNn to us naively washing even more of our dutty laundy in the US and global media.
I dont see CNN highlighing good news, nation building stories about Jamaica, instead I see them looking to pull ratings with belittling stories and sensationalizing Jamaica's domestic challenges, all this to the entertainment of its viewers.

What additional information from North America or the globe can a partnership with CNN bring that cable TV and the net does not already flood us in Jamaica with?

Its still early days, but knowing North American media, i do NOT see this being a good thing for Jamaica in any way.

mi understand that there are merits to bringing things into the light.
The other day, someone said to me &quot;the best disinfectant is sunlight&quot;..

but I do see how things work here in north america.. Its all smokes and mirrors.
Crime in predominantly white Canadian communities it seems will be brushed under the carpet.
This as the crime index has alot to do with property values.

Crime in predominantly black communities are blared all over the news.

We cant even say with factually about the crimes in certain communities, becuse, we simply not told about them..

This came clear to me just recently when the police killed &quot;someone ' in a predominanly while community here. The community is bosted as being among Canada's top 5 communites.. the only drawback (according to McLeans), was the price of realestate.. the article then went on to say &quot;but thats the price you pay for living in a City with one of the lowest crime rate in Canada&quot;..
Ironically just as this article came out the police shot and killed a motorist that was stopped for 'driving erattically&quot; in that SAMWE community..
The news bearly got out, and since then NOTHING more been heard. This is over a month now. The victim name, race, nothing.. we have heard zilch since .. Nothing in the news, nada.. Its like &quot;abarakadabara! poof!.. it didnt happen.. back to Utopia.. (<span style="font-style: italic">que the happy children riding around giggling on their tricycles.. flower petals blowing gently in the wind..)</span>
This kind of convenient coverup is systemic in North America. It provides the illusion of safe neighbourhoods, and sometimes, when you think about it.. , they may have a workable formula there..

the one that still pains me is the Pace University blk kid, who got shot down in Westchester for no good reason.....shot down, killed, for what,

now media, as u were talking, i remember when Jenna Bush did do her piece on Ja, for days, me had to hold me head low and walk, cudden tek it up at all, caa u dun know, when dem show dem piece deh on Ja, it come in like a so de whole a Ja stay....

PleX, you are not wrong. When I first read the story I arrived at the same conclusions for the most part.. There is a tendency for Jamaicans to laud and praise efforts by these &quot;First World&quot; nations when they come knocking or calling on us.. Some may say, I'm not friendly, but that's not it, it's just that we are too accepting and I'm aware of their nature to exploit certain situations.. We should welcome their intent to work with us, but we should never let our guard down and be prepared to confront them when they slip up..
