Rural bus system to be restructured

TRANSPORT MINISTER Mike Henry has announced that the Government is seeking to bring greater structure to rural area public transportation.
During his contribution to the Budget Debate yesterday, Henry said indications are that smaller-type buses than those mostly used within the JUTC's fleet will more appropriately serve the rural transportation needs.
He said the structured programme being developed will be piloted in western Jamaica out of Montego Bay Metro, along with Ocho Rios, Santa Cruz and May Pen.
"After listening to some of the absolutely filthy lyrics that were on CDs that were taken from the ill-fated bus that crashed in the Christiana area, resulting in the death of three students from Holmwood Technical, I am convinced that the conscience of the country at large is at stake if nothing is done over time to remedy much of the conditions under which schoolchildren are being transported daily, especially in rural Jamaica," Henry said.
Meanwhile, the minister announced the acquisition of special JUTC buses for the disabled.
"We have secured some special units to boost the complement of buses within the service that are designated and specially equipped to serve the special needs of members of the disabled community, including wheelchair-riding commuters," Henry said.
He told the House of Representatives that the buses offers greater flexibility in terms of handling special circumstances and needs, and also in relation to handling group events among the physically challenged community.
