AN American fugitive who has been hiding in the island for the past 12 years will be deported to his homeland after he pleaded guilty to overstaying.

Randy Conney, a 45-year-old gym instructor of Maryland, pleaded guilty yesterday when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Conney, who is wanted in the United States on drug and assault charges, had entered the country in 1999 for a six-month visit and never returned home. <span style="font-weight: bold">He was held on May 1 on premises at West End Road, Negril during a police operation</span>.

Conney had originally been charged with illegally entering the country as immigration had no record of his entry. But the fugitive told the court that he entered the island lawfully using his driver’s licence and a birth certificate.

He said further that he had been given a document by immigration which was stolen when thieves broke into his house. Conney also told the court that immigration authorities would not now have a record of his entry as their record keeping does not date back to 1999.

After listening to Conney, Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey made an order for him to be charged with overstaying. The fugitive immediately pleaded guilty.

&quot;Your honour, while I was here I was a good man and did not cause any injury or problems,&quot; Conney said.

But the magistrate told him that that did not excuse him from the offence. He was fined $5000 or 30 days. The fine was however waived. The charge of illegal entry was withdrawn.

Works both ways,...there are many jamaican illegals in the US,Uk and Canada too,some having overstayed for years,who like this man has simply got their head down,stayed under the radar and been upstanding citizens,....is it fair to sweep and clear THEM out too....?

In any case,it,s far from &quot;nice police work&quot;,..this man probably only came to the attention of the local renta -police by sheer chance.

Yes I saw that part rich,and it doesnt make any difference to my argument,...how many Jamaicans abroad who have fled Jamaica on far worse charges,live and let live I say,if he is willing to comply with local laws,and stay out of trouble then I have no problem with him overstaying.

i was not aware that it was a common thing for wanted Jamaicans to flee to other countries...I thought the Visa thing put paid to that long time.

This guy was running an Icecream and Internet shop on West End in Negril... nice spot great Icecream.. Rum Raisin and Grape Nut were to die for..

Hope someone keep up that business...

Heard some no so nice things about him that I am surprised that he kept under the radar this long, I am sure the local police knew he was there because they frequent his shop, perhaps they thought he was Legit because he has moved the business to several different Locations.. He was even on the Beach once.
