Three sites in Barbados and Jamaica are among 42 nominated for inscription this year on the World Heritage List run by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
The two Caribbean islands have never before been on the list which recognizes sites for their “outstanding universal value”.
Barbados has nominated the city of Bridgetown and the Garrison, <span style="font-weight: bold">while Jamaica has proposed Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park.</span>UNESCO’s 21-member World Heritage Committee will decide which of the nominated sites to include on the list when it meets in Paris in June.
In addition to Barbados and Jamaica, countries hoping to be included on the World Heritage list for the first time are Micronesia and Palau, which made a joint nomination, the Republic of Congo and the United Arab Emirates.
The number of properties already on the World Heritage List is 911.
