May I then assume that you disagree with the Pew Research findings that indicate that because blacks and particularly black women adhere to church teachings of intolerance of homosexuality far more than does the overall population, that Lemon's fear is based on reality? </div></div>


you don't have to assume- i state it loudly that i disagree...copy that?

no guy's &quot;findings&quot; can substitute for a lifetime of experience...
this guy is merely using his 'color' or 'race' or whatever you want to call it to get attention...
that is his own issue &amp; he should not drag &quot;the black community&quot; into it...
if he wants to bang men he is free to do so...we have enough people from all directions putting out statistic after statistic to show how 'black' people this and 'black' people that...
i have seen a lot of news over the years concerning violence against gays, &amp; i must say i do not in any way see how the violence is being disproportionately committed by 'blacks'...

yes 'blacks' are generally religious/spiritual or whatever you want to call it, but that is not their main issue with gayness...
as far as i see in the 'black' community there are plenty of gays &amp; no one is running around attacking them..

I accept your personal feelings on homosexuality but in this case you have as much validity as those white folks who say there is no racism in the white community because many of them voted for a black man.

Try walking around in a gay person's (high heeled) shoes for a while and see how you are treated.

I do not advise attending any church except the UU in drag.

Homosexuality is considered bad by several segments of society and by a wide margin in those segments who follow homophobic religions. The more religious the more homophobic and reactionary in their thinking. Men with masculinity image problems also are very homophobic as are those who are deep in the closet and who greatly fear expressing their homosexuality because of the stigma and persecution it brings from homophobic &quot;friends&quot; relatives and employers.

You tell me what would happen to a man looking and dressed like the Cuban in the link provided were he to appear in a rural Christian Church in Jamaica or the U.S one Sunday morning to pray.?

Of course no thinking or self respecting homosexual male or female would attend a &quot;Christian&quot; church any more than any thinking or self respecting woman would attend a Christian, Jewish or Islamic church, shul, mosque because of the misogynist beliefs and practices of those institutions.

GLAAD's senior media field strategist discusses the significance of Don Lemon’s “coming out” in the African-American community.

Just weeks before the release of his book Transparent, CNN anchor Don Lemon publically revealed that he is gay on Monday. Though being homosexual has become more socially acceptable over the years, “coming out of the closet” and admitting that you’re gay is extremely difficult for African-Americans. Why? “It’s about the worst thing you can be in black culture,” Lemon told the New York Times.



Over the past few days, the media has focused on the fact that Lemon is now “out.” His openness, however, shines a spotlight on a topic whose relevance has never really dimmed in the African-American community: homophobia.



Some believe that Lemon’s announcement is a stepping stone in the Black community. “I think it really is an opportunity for [Blacks] to have real conversations about how the vestiges of our history impact our current perceptions about sexual orientation and gender identity” Daryl Hannah, Senior Media Field Strategist of the Gay &amp; Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, tells BET.com.

“A lot comes from real people just sitting down and having real conversations,” Hannah says.



“In that conversation when someone says ‘I am a gay man who wants to be able to take care of my family’; ‘I want to be able to go to work without fear of being fired for who I am’; ‘I want to be able to walk the streets without fear of being who I am,’ we see that we have a lot in common as Americans verses the differences that we have,” he says.



Hannah explains that in the African-American community “coming out” is extremely different because Black men are expected to be the strong male figure. If someone is gay, there is an inherent belief that he cannot be that figure and that he is less of a man.



Though any Black man expressing his homosexuality publically is a triumph for the LGBT African-American community, Hannah believes that Lemon’s announcement was particularly special.



“Whenever a Black kid who is struggling with his sexual orientation turns on CNN and he sees Don Lemon on TV, there’s an instant connection there because he is now looking at the face of someone on a national news network who understands what it feels like to be young, who understands what it feels like to be gay, who understands what it feels like to be Black. And, who ultimately understands how all of those identities intersect. And on top of all of that, understands what it’s like to be afraid to come out of the closet.&quot;
