Labour Day

Hi folks, its Labour Day, a national holiday in Jamaica today.

I haven`t been too far out of my neighbourhood so far, but what I have seen is sparse civic activity. A newly constructed pedestrian has been installed adjacent to the entrance of a popular church on the Portmore Pines main road.

The usual annual street cleaning and bush cutting rituals have so far, not been seen, but I am sure there are active cells doing there thing at various pockets in the island.

next ting, the air traffic controllers were suppose to be having a strike, whappen wid dat, dem never bother???

Thanks sista Cee. To tell you the truth, I haven`t tuned in on any source of news so far.
Most likely, Pearnel has intervened and there`s no strike, is my bet.

AMAICANS in the Corporate Area have come out to lend their support to various Labour Day projects.

The projects include the sprucing up of schools and health centres in addition to repainting worn out pedestrian crossings.

At the Hazel Montieth Skills Training Centre and the Citizens Advice Bureau Basic School on Beechwood Avenue, parents and staff of the City of Kingston Credit Union (COK) painted the buildings, put up picket fences and scoured walls that were not in need of a new coat of paint.

COK Chief Executive Officer Jacqueline Mighty, said the Cross Roads Branch of the Credit Union had taken on the sprucing up of the basic school and skills training centre as its Labour Day initiative.

"Each branch has taken on their own project as we believe in offering our corporate support to creating a better learning environment," Mighty said.

In Port Royal members of the community embarked upon drain cleaning and solid waste disposal in a bid to curtail a rat and mosquito problem the community has been facing.

Cops from the Mobile Reserve are spearheading the Labour Day project at the St Michael's Primary School at Tower Street in Rae Town while there is a beehive of activity at the Rollington Town Health Centre in East Kingston.

Members of the Cameron Lane community, which runs off Whitehall Avenue, are also doing a general clean up of their community.

DESPITE a Supreme Court order to return to work, air traffic controllers at Kingston's Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) are remaining on strike, which is causing flights to be delayed. The uncertainty has reportedly caused some airlines to cancel incoming flights.

Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) spokesperson Nicole Hutchinson told the Observer that delays today were caused by a changeover in shifts, as supervisors continue to fill in for the striking workers

&quot;Delays are expected to be averted. Air traffic controllers did not report for work so contingency measures are remaining in place. Jamaica's air space remains open,&quot; said Hutchinson. &quot;There maybe possible cancellations as some airlines may not be confident enough to come into the airspace but the matter should be rectified in one hour.&quot;

Meantime, the Airports Authority of Jamaica (AAJ) is advising passengers to make contact with their respective airlines before heading to Norman Manley.

The labour ministry yesterday obtained an order in the Supreme Court ordering the island's air traffic controllers to immediately return to work and barring them from taking any further industrial action within a 28-day period.

The ministry was forced to obtain the order after the 100-plus air traffic controllers yesterday walked off the job after wage talks broke down on Saturday.
