South Florida is BAD. Broward county is dismal

Last week 1400 1st & 2nd year teachers got their pink slips along with 55 technical support professionals . (more TSP will be cut before this over) TSP had hundreds of positions eliminated last year. 4 out of 32 nurses got cut.

Today 3 positions at my school got cut ( Media Specialist, Therapist / MSW, Guidance Counselor) 3 teachers got pink slips last week.

So far, I am ok.

They say next year will be worse.

Note to self: if move to Fl in the near future, private school is the way to go

I just found out this week that the gentleman that comes in to clean our offices at night has a master's degree.

Broward School District pays ex-custodian $108,000 a year to teach janitors

For nearly five years, the Broward County School District has been paying a former head custodian more than $100,000 a year to teach school janitors the finer points of cleaning.

Reynolds Hedland III, 52, has no college degree or state teaching certificate, yet earns more than 99 percent of Broward County's teachers. His lessons include how to mop and scrub bathrooms, strip and wax floors, and &quot;maintain the cleanliness, orderliness, appearance and safe condition of schools.&quot;

He's scheduled to teach only 58 days this year at Sheridan Technical Center in Hollywood, records show, but his $108,000 salary is calculated based on his working 241 days. The rest of the time he does work similar to head custodians making less than half his salary.

And while 1,400 Broward teachers lost their jobs this month, his job is secure. Sheridan isn't cutting any positions.

Hedland's pay is &quot;outrageous, it's truly outrageous,&quot; said School Board member Nora Rupert, a former reading teacher. &quot;I made a lot less than that as a teacher.&quot;

In response to the Sun Sentinel's findings, Superintendent Jim Notter said Thursday that he's opened an administrative review into Hedland's salary.

&quot;Is he doing work as a custodian or is he doing work to enhance the training program? I don't know,&quot; he said. &quot;We're looking into the issues.&quot;

Hedland declined to comment, but Principal Robert Boegli, who oversees Sheridan and McFatter Technical Center in Davie, called Hedland a &quot;vital&quot; part of his staff.

&quot;He's really a very good employee,&quot; the principal said, explaining that Hedland functions as a &quot;facilities coordinator&quot; at Sheridan and McFatter. He supervises janitors and handles work orders, repairs and inventory, Boegli said.

Many of those duties are included in the job description of a head custodian, including &quot;conducting training classes&quot; for janitors. Both Sheridan and McFatter have head custodians, each of whom make less than $50,000 a year, records show.

Hedland was McFatter's head custodian before district officials approved him for the teaching position at Sheridan in 2006. His salary, then about $45,000 a year, more than doubled.

The district doesn't have a job description for Hedland's current hybrid position, Boegli acknowledged. He believes it's justified by part of the Broward Teachers Union contract, which says teachers will do &quot;other duties as assigned by the principal.&quot;

Boegli said some of his other employees are paid as teachers, but don't teach at all, including a testing coordinator, a technology coordinator, and a business and community liaison.

He said the career-readiness centers need the &quot;teacher-based&quot; positions.

&quot;We're more like a college,&quot; he said. &quot;We've got a lot more things that happen than in a normal school.&quot;

Rupert questioned why the district would pay $108,000 a year for Hedland's job. And board member Dave Thomas, also a former teacher, said Hedland's salary &quot;seems fraudulent.&quot;

&quot;Someone should not be called a teacher, someone should not be paid as a teacher, if they're not teaching,&quot; he said. &quot;I've got a real problem with that.&quot;

Pat Santeramo, president of the Broward Teachers Union, said he didn't know Hedland's position existed. He said it was another example of waste and mismanagement in the district.

Vocational teachers, who teach job-training skills such as hair styling and car repair, often are among the Broward district's top-paid teachers because they are paid to work year-round, instead of 10 months a year. They also are paid for teaching an extra hour per day.

Many don't have college degrees, but are paid for their years of experience in their fields.

Yes babes, ah di same here. Teachers dropping left and right. Di State ah try force Public Charter Schools did private managers,

Di Govenor has already appointed an Emergency Financial Manager. Dis is di second wan, which has rendered di regular School Board impotent.

let's face it...western economic philosophy &amp; its related isms &amp; schisms are bankrupt...
it will never be what it was again...
the economists will eventually have to come clean &amp; admit that a total overhaul of the systems we have known is necessary...

the philosophy of 'economic growth' is dead...new creative thoughts are needed...bold new leaders are needed...the handwriting is on the wall but as usual we will be the last to know

Getting back to Florida ... Isn't their governor, Rick Scott, the same one responsible for the largest Medicare fraud case in U.S. history, totaling $1.7 billion? A wealthy, vulpine scumbag who now sees teachers as the problem?

Tanya - I think he is pointing out that he has a Masters degree and with the job market as it is, he has to take a Janitorial job.


I am kind of wary of Union bashing. It is one of those &quot;who feels it, knows it&quot; thing. My Aunt is a teacher for over 37 year, Mico Teacher college trained, two Masters in the Educational field and if it weren't for her teacher's union, the DC government would have thrown her out the streets years ago. So I see value in the Unions. People don't understand without them, State and local governments can and will abuse public employees.

Some of the services we enjoy as citizens are as a result of the fight Unions take to the government. You don't know the good of something until its gone..I would hate to see Unions become obsolete. Daag nyam all a wi suppa cause is not public employees one gwine to suffa if that happens.

Why should a janitor not earn more than a teacher? I see no logical reason why not.
