Sex offender report affects taxi operators

Local taxi associations want the police to publicly provide data to substantiate their reports that taxi operators are the perpetrators of most sexual offences in Jamaica.
The associations said members have been negatively affected since the Jamaica Constabulary Force held a press conference on May 19, in which it released the names of the country’s most wanted sex offenders and commented on related issues.
President of the Jamaica Association of Hackney Carriages, Willard Costley, said assistant commissioner of police in charge of the criminal investigations branch, Ealan Powell, has agreed to meet with the various taxi associations tomorrow.
However, he said the association is not pleased that the police want to have the talks in private and out of the media glare.
Costley said passengers have become extremely sceptical of taxi operators since the police singled out the group in relation to sexual offences.
