This thread is inspired by SandiF’s harrowing experience (no joke) and Peasie’s comment about hard economic times.

Have you changed anything about your normal behavior because times are so hard?

To answer my own question, here are a few things that have changed:

1. I never check on my 401k. (What’s the point? I’m not moving anything anywhere.)

2. Walk up ATMs are a no-no. (My back is turned and I’m getting money. Are you kidding me? Just stick me up right now.)

3. I upgraded my alarm system. (Did you know if your dog is under a certain height then they won’t set off the motion detector now?)

I don't know if it is due to the change in the times or because I am older and a bit wiser but....

When I am out in public I am more aware, used to be my head was buried in a book or the paper on transit now I pay more attention to the people around me.

Here ATMs aren't a problem during daylight hours but after dark they can be and a lot of ppl tend to stay home. But things are not noticeably harder now than usual. Ppl are accustomed to hardship here, I guess.

Nope. I live in a big city so I act like I live in a big city, constantly aware of my surroundings and always on the move. I like variety so you won't catch me in the same routine daily.

I always joke (but dead serious) that if I am walking home and lose my keys, that if I try to retrace my steps it will take me a helluva long time to find those keys since I often zigzag from side to side.

I don't know if it is the depressed economy or what but I do know that alot of the crime here is the result of substance addiction.

I don't understand why it is so easy for me to spot the drug dealers downtown even witness transactions but the cops mussie have on blinders

Oh yes because that white skin head in the yankees jacket could not possibly be selling dope

Agreed. I don't know why people do that. I am more concerned
when runners/joggers do it

If they are in a group I think it is ok along the walkway but not alone

What I have changed about our behavior are some tips found in the zero waste home blog. http://zerowastehome.blogspot.com/

In this issue the husband highlights how much $$ saved by making changes. I have not calculated our savings but do see a difference.

But now we have a teenager so we a market how to be cool &amp; green.. Since im still growing, pants can be cut to make shorts and flip flops and 1 pair a sneakers can work (he used to borrow from his dad but im foot gawn past dat). We are also imparting that u dont need THAT many clothes.. We will see how it goes


I now look to refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle.


We do not use disposable water bottles and walk with our reusable - we have a few so stash a few frozen ones in the car and they are cool when it is time for the second bottle

For entertainment we play board games, go online and watch movies and dem ting dere and project it onto the larger tv.

I seethe when I see my family members coming in wid plastic bags



One thing I have not yet broken is my attachment to Fios I need my HGTV &amp; de foofool housewives on bravo

Nothing has changed security wise even though we had a rash of robberies. We have nosy neighbors across the street, my ever vigilant mother and Clancy to alert us

It took me half an hour to figure out that nize means noise. SMH. I'm shame.

I have a co-worker who runs at the butt crack of dawn every morning with her iPod. (She turned me on to the iPod Touch a couple of years ago with the armband but I digress.) Same route, same time in Woodstock no less. It wouldn't take nothing for someone to knock her upside the head. And yes, she did almost get hit by an SUV one morning.
