As capitalism does its slow dance of death, the poorest countries are the ones that will be hit the hardest.

The ship is sinking and no one in Jamaica is looking for an alternative but only the same old "reforms" and search for investments that never work out.

That all depends on how you feel about the revolution.

Those who oppose it will point to the problems and almost always without making any reference to the U.S war on that small island nation.
No other nation upon which the U.S has turned its power against has survived that attack.
For this reason alone I'd have to say they are holding their own in the battle.

Once and IF the United States ends its hostilities everyone will be able to see what a socialist nation can really do for its society.

I think you have to consider that even as bad as conditions and repression is in Cuba today, there is no major thought of turning back the clock within the Cuban populace.

Yes they want more say in the running of things but they seem to understand that going back to what the United States wants would be far more unacceptable than living the hard but clearly better life they have.

I'm not sure how much oil they have undersea but when the wells start producing (this year?) it is sure to mean better things for all Cubans regardless of what the United States does short of invading or nuking Cuba.

As I said it all depends on how you feel about the Cuban revolution. How one feels about the Cuban revolution largely depends on what one has read or heard or seen on TV about it .

In the U.S and Jamaica everyone is predisposed and/or brainwashed to dislike socialism so most people see only the bad in Cuba.

In these fora the anti-Cuban sentiment is further driven by a dislike of me as people otherwise totally ignorant of what the Cuban revolution regularly make anti-Cuban posts just because I said something positive about it..

All that need be said is that the Cuban people are intent on keeping their revolution and they will also gripe and work for the changes they want in that revolution.

In the end it is the Cuban people who are the ones to decide how they are doing .

The fact that they rank very high among developing nations in terms of social welfare despite all the US have done to stymie their economic growth is amazing. However, looking at the infrastructure it is as if it was frozen in a time capsule dating back to the 50's. Kinda sad.

That is true in some respects. In many pictures of Cuba the photographers like to get in the American cars from the 50s because they are so unusual if only because they keep them running by making parts for them since none are available.

The Cubans also don't have extra money for paint and other maintenance supplies so they don't maintain buildings as well as they might.

As you said, they spend their resources in that poor country on taking care of the people. They may not have the best homes but none are homeless.

They have the right priorities.

If you have to be poor you'd still be much better off in Cuba than in almost any other Third World country.

I think that the big mistake people make is comparing Cuba to much richer First World nations rather than other Third World countries.

No beggars in the streets. No homeless people sleeping in the streets, the lowest crime rate in the hemisphere ( you can walk through Havana in the middle of the night SAFELY). They may not have much money but they are guaranteed good health care and a good education.

And don't you think that most of the couple of billion people who barely stay alive on $1-2 dollars a day would rather be Cuban?

Sure those of us doing well in New York and elsewhere in the rich industrialized countries wouldn't care for life in Cuba but an African mother with her baby dying from hunger and/or disease would think it heaven.


Absent the U.S war on Cuba many more would think so as well.

jobs will not save jamaica or anywhere else for that matter...the theory of full employment is a myth...the big so-called &quot;developed&quot; economies of the world were built on slavery &amp; rape which is why they are all experiencing economic trouble now...
humanity has to be a little bit more imaginative at this juncture...

as far as jamaica- brain-dead leaders with no imagination are not gonna get it done...

can't wait for new blood with some cahones to start getting some light;

pnp &amp; jlp are guilty of crimes against humanity

a super-power bullying a small nation is far more sad...

but the US can't afford for any nation in the area to attemot real independence...they have set up numerous &quot;doctrines&quot; (starting with monroe) over the years stating they must rule over all in the region

sure individuals can create jobs but how much of an effect will that have on unemployment? very miniscule...and how many individuals will want to invest in a place where the perception is that criminals have the upper hand &amp; law enforcement is corrupt?
big businesses &amp; organizations have way more power to leverage the gov't in terms of &quot;creating jobs&quot;...
but the gov'ts have failed miserably in giving j'cans any sense of direction or any programs that would change the mindset of the population- to look for some savior to come with these elusive jobs...

first &amp; foremost a change of mind-set is needed for the j'can population..
the failed legacy of pnp &amp; jlp gov'ts can not or have shown that they simply will not do this...

That would be similar to what the US government did in trying to develop the economy of Iraq and Afghanistan before the country is secured.

The Jamaican criminals have moved up to a more sinister type of crime.
That is kidnapping.
They kidnapped a businessman in of all the places Norwood.

The ultra secure Norwood.
This is worse news than. A growing murder rate.
Should we ignore this?

If the neighbors in the areas where they are holding these kidnapped victims felt secure enough they would make it inaccessable to these criminals.
But how are they even if one or twohave guns stand up against the multitude of gun criminals?
I promised it and it is here now.
The exclusion of ordinar citizens from fire arms licenses is comming back to destroy the ones who promoted the policy to the point where they will look towards fleeing the country as a result of the effects of that policy.
