Robert Brown, a 40-year-old Jamaican who was caught smuggling some $2 million worth of heroin at the Piarco airport, was sentenced to two years hard labour after spending more than eight prison years awaiting trial, according to Trinidad news reports.
The media reported that Justice Devan Rampersad exercised leniency in passing sentence because of the lengthy period the prisoner spent in custody.
According to the Trinidad Express, Brown was from the parish of St. Mary.
Brown, who was on his way to Barbados from Trinidad when he was arrested on August 6, 2005, pleaded guilty to the offence.
He was committed to stand trial at the High Court on June 29, 2006. However, his indictment was only filed on August 18, 2010.
Four packets of the drugs were found in the soles of two sneakers, while 39 packets were found in the lining of Brown's suitcase.
