Declaring items - help please

Morning greetings,

Want to go directly to the 'declare' line when arriving in Jamaica, mainly because most times I get searched and given a real hard time anyway!

My question is, when declaring items like underwear for kids (in the original package), other new clothing, new toys - all with price tags and receipts, what will they charge for taxes/duty? for example, total items about $200 CAD

if i recall the duty is in the 45-65% range.

As a policy and to [censored] off custom agents.. I always go toe the something to declare line...

I usually travel with nothing....But when they ask me I usually reply as per Oscar Wilde... "My Genius"

the exception being in the UK, when I travel from the carribean I always buy two bottle of rum.. and join something to declare line....which is always empty...

And when they ask I present the two bottles and declare my optimism to pay tax.. when they try to wave me through I argue with them saying I am required to pay tax as I dont want to break the law....And it is my duty to add to the treasury income....

Meanwhile the poor custom officers is watching people with twenty bottles of rum walk through.. so they get [censored] off and threathen me with arrest...

Try that in Kanada.... Help a suffera smuggle...

thanks RichD.... wow, that's a BIG amount!!!! never thought it would be soooo much not worth buying tings here then!

this 45-65% covers both duty and taxes right?

if I have the original receipts they MUST charge me what I paid right?

no they can charge based on their valuation.

I would suggest you un-package all the clothing and mix it with your own. declare any toys you bring and leave it at that.

or you can try what my brother does..he always goes to te nothing to declare line and when asked if he is not bringing any gifts he say yes &quot;cash&quot;.

RG, its hard to say because it look like customs a Ja have dem own a rules, and depending on who u get, u might get whey, or u might pay thru ur nose

anyway.........

try ur best and tek off every tag, and if u can wash and dry de new tings dem so dem no look so new,

toys, new shoes??? u have to declare that, and do wha Rich say mix dem up in your clothes....

they really terrorize us like this to dissuade us from buying abroad, and try mek us buy in Jamaica

Is that the reason? I thought that is was just to extort $$ from people just trying to bring a likkle something for family and friends.

I spread the clothing around, and if asked (I seldom am) I just say that my grandchildren were already in Jamaica, and I was bringing their things to them.

u can scuff the bottom of the shoes like someone wore it because even if they do not fit, you know it is staying on the island anyway

and yes to what the others said.. take of the tags, wash it and mix it in
