Johhnycakes, mind control is as subtle as it is terrifying! If you repeat the same lie over and over and over to people - most people will believe it, no matter how fraudulent the message. People who don't understand where 'money' comes from , who gets to 'manufacture' it and how, and who gets to print it have swallowed hook, line and sinker the 'conventional wisdom' about 'deficits', 'austerity', 'sacrifices' and so on.
Look at Canada, for instance. Canada has an absolutely VAST 'National Debt', measured in the range of ove 500 Billion Dollars last time I saw it (which was ten years ago) and yet Canadians are some of the most docile and obedient taxpayers on the planet! Compound interest on fake money created out of thin air by the banks continues to enrich the people who own the privately-owned banks while Canadians are told their health care system is too expensive and the postal employees have their pensions stripped away.
Don't Jamaicans pay their taxes?? Are they all tax evaders? Why then is the government so broke? Could it be because of compound interest on money they didn't want to borrow in the first place? Do the Greek people want another bailout to pay off their oppressors?! All the governments are turning out to be nothing more than rubber-stamping puppets marching to somebody else's tune.

MsPeaches,
All of these problems could be solved with democratic political/electoral systems and a democratic economic system in which the people rule from the bottom up.
True socialism in which workers run things from the bottom up,( not the Soviet, Chinese models as they existed nor the system as it now exists if Cuba where the rule is from the top down) is the answer to the economic problems of the working people of the United States, of Greece, of Jamaica.
A participatory form of government is also the answer to the problem of misrepresentation in which our elected officials are bribed to do what the monied people would have them do instead of what the voters want.
The internet will make citizen participation in all the political decisions possible where logistics made it nearly impossible in the past necessitating our REPRESENTATIVE form which has become totally corrupted to the point where it has become totalitarian.
Once the people have control of the representatives or the reps are eliminated altogether, socialism will follow as sure as night follows day.
You may not think so but respected polls show that people do want single-payer health care, the free educational system such as exists in Cuba and a far greater say in their work conditions.
As you said the mind control has people believing otherwise and actually believing stuff that is against their best interests.
How many blue collar workers just barely making a living take the word of Rush Limbaugh (and other very rich owners of the media on the economy) when he makes in excess of 50 million dollars a year and has nothing at all in common with a worker?
The answer is democracy but it is amazing the number of people who prefer totalitarian forms; who want to be told what to do, how to live, where to live.
It is also no accident that those who are most slavish to the God they worship are also those who just follow their political leaders and believe any crazy thing THEY tell them.
It is the refusal to question authority, a slave mentality if you will, that keeps us down.
Get up. Stand up.
