while a sad incidident for all involved. its very curious how the Globe and Mail delete all or most readers' comments that obviously if unfavorable towards the police..

dont qoute me on this.. (been years since volunteer days at associated youth services of peel, but they had replaced the Young Offenders Act with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.. it was said to be more leinient for certain more serious crimes, but overall fairer than the YOA..
For shop-lifting and that petty stuff, they dont get jail time, instead they do what is called alternative measures (community service, letters of apology, ... volunteers take em to movies and write case files , etc..)
if convicted of homicide or manslaughter, I <span style="font-style: italic">think </span>he would be placed in a youth correctional facility till he's of adult age..

if a did some ppl, dem wudden even memba dem,

Yah, I just heard his distress call played on the radio.

Even as he lay there with his life slipping away he was showing concern for the health and safety of those who had caused this tragedy.

Where were the parents of these youths? Don't you notice that your kid and your vehicle are missing at 4:40 in the morning and realize that no good can come from such a thing?

isnt there a law that can hold parents complicite for the actions of underaged youths?
would that be in Canada or was it the States?

I'd love to find out that such a law exist up here in Canada, unfortunately their identity will never be known. Junior will get a slap on the wrist and get on with his life (although I did hear that he himself suffered serious injuries in the incident).

there's always hope. sometimes u have to look for it.

it's not the law that teaches u that something is bad. parents, school, your neighbours, your family, they are the ones who teach u that something is bad.

the law closes the loop by punishing you for doing something that you and everyone else already know is bad.

the criticism of the YOA was that the punishment wasnt strong enough. so changes were made, one of them being that for some youth, they could be charged as adults and face a harsher penalty.

mike harris government investigated the notion of holding parents accountable for their kids' crimes. if i remember correctly, the idea was shown to be unconstitutional. you cannot penalize a person (parent) for a crime they did not commit.

i dont know about what slap on the wrist now exists in terms of young offenders, especially for a serious crime such as the one in this case. i think it has been clear for many years, and especially for black youth, that in fact, the law often goes hard against them.

maybe you have different stats on youth punishment out in durham.

All your positions are wrong.....

Parents just cannot monitor their kids all the time.
The child can live two different lives .... I know that for a fact.
The child should not be incarcerated because by the looks of it, is was not an intentional homicide.

A 15-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Const. Garrett Styles, who was dragged and pinned by a minivan during a traffic stop just north of Toronto on Tuesday.

The teen was charged Tuesday night in hospital, where he remains with serious injuries.

Styles, 32, died Tuesday while making a traffic stop on a rural highway east of Newmarket, Ont.

He was dragged by a minivan for 300 metres before the vehicle flipped, pinning him underneath.</span>
