Passenger train back after 20 years
It was a busy Monday for the Jamaica Railway Corporation when the passenger train took scores of commuters on its first trip in more than 20 years.
Station manager Terrence Morgan said the rail service from Spanish Town to Linstead was well supported.
" It was a wonderful experience to see persons out in great numbers to support the venture," Morgan said.
He told THE STAR that the service will help early travellers as the train rolls out of the Spanish Town station at 6:25 a.m. and arrives in Linstead at 7 a.m.
On the question of the train service affecting other forms of public transportation, Morgan said this is not the aim as there will be only two round trips daily for now.
"Mi glad that di train start to run again as mi haffi reach work early in the morning so the trip from Linstead to Spanish Town will help," Marlon Johnstone, a passenger said.
He was one of many who welcome the return of passenger rail service to Jamaica.
The initial rollout will run from Monday to Friday and will complement the public transportation system especially now that the Bog Walk gorge has been closed.
