Today marked the end of the National Convention of the National Democratic Party (NDC), which was held in Sunyani in the Brong-Ahafo Region in order to choose the flagbearer of the party in the December 2012 elections.
Professor John Evans Atta Mills, who has been President of Ghana since winning the December 2008 elections by a very narrow margin, was challenged by Nana Adjemang Rawlings, the former First Lady under the J.J. Rawlings Administration. Mrs. Rawlings is a very addept businesswoman in her own right and has also championed women's rights in Ghana. She has a lot of respect in the country. But her husband the former military dictator who lauched two successful coups against previous governments and afterward was elected twice when Democracy resumed in the country. He lost the 2001 election to ex-President Kuffuor.
Mr. Rawlings had been very critical during the past two years of Prof. Atta Mills' style of government. He was impatient to see things happen more quickly but Prof. Mills always wants to depend on the Rule of Law and respect for Legal Process, which sometimes seems to take forever in Ghana. It was generally assumed that if Mrs. Rawlings were to be elected, her husband would figure largely in how things happened in her government. Mr. Rawlings retains the love and respect of millions of Ghanaians who were his former supporters during his time in office, and to this day he can circulate among the public without any heavy security surrounding him.
However, there are few people who are a qualified as Prof. Atta Milss, who is an accountant and former Finance Minister and auditor and a Law Professor to boot. He is a mild-mannered,humble, brilliant, pious and incorruptible man who has won the hearts of Ghanaians through his wise, level-headed and inclusive approach to running the nation's affairs. He has tried his best to instill in the public in Ghana a profound respect for the Rule of Law.
Campaigning has been going on for weeks and a lot of people were afraid that the Party would be split right down the middle, thereby making it easy for their political opponents in the NPP to exploit the situation to win the 2012 election.
However, when the voting was finished this afternoon, Prof. Atta Mills had obtained a whopping 96.9% of the votes of the delegates. People are overjoyed that the NPP won't get off so easily after all. We all wish the Professor all the best in the coming elections as his stewardship since his Jan, 2009 inauguration has been a real inspiration to Ghanaians in general. It really matters to people that the man at the top isn't collecting graft and bribes , especially from outsiders. So the mood in Ghana is peaceful and happy this evening. May God/Allah richly Bless and guide him and his hardworking supporters for they have won a victory for all Ghanaians today.
