I'm not disagreeing with you because I'm not suggesting that the child is merely observing colour.
I do believe the child has noticed that you are of a different race and wanted to know if you were considered a black person.
I didn't realize that the was so young but still, there are many avenues to learn that a person with certain features is black.
And those features are unmistakable esp. when most people in your world are white.
So what I am saying is that I'm not shocked and I do not find it unusual.
Race consciousness is the way of the world (except for some blacks).
