I agree that many things cannot be explained.

I'm going to take it as a given that Derek's coworker's, coworker's family, and plus one's religion believes in reincarnation.

if you hold certain beliefs you are less likely to seek alternative explanations for things that are not easily explained. If i believe in miracles and something unexpected and not easily explained happens i am likely to attribute it as a miracle..if i don't share that belief i might look for a scientific explanation.
If i believe in reincarnation i might choose that explanation rather than dig deeper to find another possible explanation.
