Hmm. So I am in no way trying to blame the victim's family, but what was going to happen when he walked those 7 blocks? Was he a latch key kid or somebody could have walked him home?

I guess all that is neither here nor there. They obviously had a false sense of security, and this man was a sick, twisted monster.

he had to walk straight from his summer camp 2 blocks then make a right, and then continue straight until he saw his parents at the doctor's office.

My daughter is 11 and can only do a straight line (I tested her once or twice while walking behind her) because there are so many Different combinations to get home, I don't use the same route daily-she would need to know which way is east, west, north and south plus all the blocks are pretty much the same length.

I read that the walk was something they planned and that they had reheared the directions with the child the previous Friday.
It was going to be the first time he did the walk by himself.
It's pretty sad that it turned out that way. *shakes head*

While I echo Tulip's response, not at all blaming the family, but 8 is too young in a big city. I read the same thing about 7 blocks with a couple of turns, even 2 blocks with no turns, I can't see myself allowing him to take that walk alone.

The entire thing is just horrible, his poor parents.

They have some, but the majority of children take the city bus and/or subway. The set-up is so different though, everyone has an elementary school withing walking distance. Only middle and high schools may be further than walking distance. A child attending a magnet elementary school would be picked up by school bus.

After he made the turn, he was to walk 5 blocks (I believe) and meet his parents at the Dentist/doctor. They would be waiting for him there.

I don't know why they thought he could manage this , most likely his first time by himself. This was not something done regularly where he had memorized the route.

Just to give a little background, It is a close community, they don't mingle with outsiders. Generally speaking, the wives don't work and They stay home with the kids, so it is highly unlikely this child was a latch key kid.

This story reminds me of Etan Patz who vanished one day on his way to school. That was also the first day he was allowed to walk the 6 or so blocks to school
in NYC. His mother never moved from the apt or changed her phone # (in case he called or found his way home)
