My local favourites are in Obituaries in the papers and on TV. Ppl say "LAYING IN STATE' AND 'INTERNMENT' instead of 'Lying in State' and 'Interment'.
'Loose' and 'lose' get mixed up here too, but there's a better explanation here than elsewhere just why this happens. In <span style="font-style: italic">Ga</span>. one of the main languages here, ''o' is pronounced like the 'oo' in 'tools' and 'oo' is pronounced like the 'o' in 'go'.
This may have originated from the Portuguese having 'been here', because the same pronunciations exist in Portuguese.
Another 'pet peeve' of mine is 'he requested for' rather than 'he asked for'. And the other day I saw 'yolk' used instead of 'yoke' - by somebody who really should have known better! Another popular one is 'some few' rather than 'a few'.
My 'adopted son' here is now a reporter for the <span style="font-style: italic">Ghana Daily Graphic</span> and while he was studying Journalism, I was constantly 'on his case' hammering the 'Ghanaianisms' out of his brain, and the effort has largely paid off. .
He writes so well it would be a shame to spoil it by using bad grammar.
I realise (realize?) that each 'English-speaking' country may harbour its own version of 'English' and that each version may be considered as valid as all the oothers, but IMHO there IS a fine line between bad grammar and local flavour.

Haven't heard it before. Don't like it.
It reminds of a conversation I had at 17 in Louisiana where this guy holding a pen asked me "is this for you?" I promise I did not understand that he was asking me if I had dropped that pen for a good 60 seconds.
I finally embraced "making groceries" although I haven't said it and don't foresee saying it. The pronunciation goes more like "mecking". Exhale. Fine, let's go grocery shopping.

Tulip, was the guy who asked if that was 'for you' Ghanaian, by any chance?
Because that's exactly what ghanaians say most of the time. Here it's considered part of Ghanaian English - and perhaps Nigerian as well - I don't know.
'mek groceries' is also African in origin. We also hear "Mek Fasss!!!" for 'Hurry up!'
'mek I' or 'mek mi' are part of the African dialest called PIDGIN ENGLISH.

Pidgin english and Jamaican patois are very similar in a lot of respects.
But Pidgin uses the word 'dey' a lot. If somebody wants to say 'I'm at home', he says 'Mi dey a house'. DEY can be used for many different situations - it's sort of an 'infill' word.
'I dey go' = 'I went' OR 'I'm going' so sometimes it's a bit confusing. But some African languages also don't distinguish between present, future and past tenses.
