Sir
I live in Priory, St Ann and always read the North Coast Times. I am a young person, I was born on the North Coast and I know a fair bit about it. The North Coast has great people, wonderful beaches and countless beauty spots.
However, I have some concerns. I think there’s too much emphasis placed on tourism and not enough focus on the people of the North Coast, especially the youth. We have so many young people on the North Coast and not much for them to do. I feel it’s time for well thinking Jamaicans with the means to maybe partner with the government and build some junior colleges here on the North Coast that are affordable to everyone, especially for us that are on the lower end of the economic spectrum.
We should have colleges that have good career opportunities that are geared towards the development of our young people. Then and only then will we start to address the under lying issues of the youth of the North Coast and, by extension, of the country.
The sooner we realize that we can’t just rely only on tourism, the better it would be for us. The tourism cake is getting smaller and smaller. However, we still have to protect our share of the tourism cake, but also we have to step up our investment in educating our young people not just to high school but beyond that. There has to be a concerted effort to get as many of our people to the college level. I firmly believe if we go in this direction, Jamaica will be the envy of the world sometime in the near future. I also believe we can’t afford not to.
I am etc.
