Re: Mass Incarceration in the US Prison System
have you seen "the new jim crow"?
the prisons are the continuation of the slavery system & the so-called blacks are the engine that makes it run;
this is institutionalized within the fabric of the american way and it will not be addressed by the popular politicians, no matter their skin shade...
it makes money for them to help them with their re-elections...
some of these politicians will even blame it on the supposed behavior of black men while refusing to assign any blame to the corrupt prison-industrial system that targets the community for mass incarceration

Rediculous, what benefit does society receive from incarcerating anyone?
The typical cost cited by states is about $35000 on average for an inmate.
It's a drain on society. Slavery was cheap labor, incarceration is not cheap.
It's a liability and not an asset.

That rhetoric is nothing but an excuse to abstain the criminal element from any personal responsiblity for their actions. Violence seems to be the fabric of young black males. When is the black community going to address this obvious problem?
Was there not someone killed and another shot at Caribbean fest in Toronto, Canada last weekend?
This is not an American phenom, but it seems to be indicative of young black male behavior.

Un-fricken believable! You actually beleive that? I'm all for not incarcerating anyone that does not commit a VIOLENT crime, (drugs use etc) BUT! blacks kill other blacks in record numbers. If you kill, you should be behind bars. 99.9% of violent crime in the big cities of the US is black on black crime. So, what you are saying is that these killers should be set free to prey on the rest of the law abiding black population?
Please, explain what a society should do with violent people? If you don't incarcerate them and keep them from killing others, what do you suggest?
You have yet to explain what benefit society receives by incarceration.
Explain....
Homicides in Baltimore for 2010 = 238
Homicides in Philadelphia 2010 = 181
Homicides in Washington DC 2010 = 131
Iraq War US and Coalition Casualties
March 2003-March 2004= aprox.=500
see graph link below
There were more people killed in three US cities last year than total coalition troops killed in Iraq, a WAR ZONE in 2003- 2004.
The three cities listed are aprox. 200 air miles from each other.
How would you solve this violent problem?

Re: Mass Incarceration in the US Prison System
How would you solve this violent problem?
By addressing the problem at the base of the symptoms and by not blaming the victims .
Provide a decent environment for every child.
Provide a good education for every child.
Provide a job with a living wage for everyone who needs a job.
Provide reparations for the black descendants of slaves for two generations or until the economic disparity caused by U.S racism no longer exists.
By eliminating the laws against cocaine and marijuana under which blacks are disproportionately imprisoned..
It is poverty that causes despair, violence, crime.
It is far easier to blame the victims of a society-wide immorality when you do not want to admit to the cause of the problem or do anything about it.
The problem is the the type of economy we have.
Further,
"Violence seems to be (in) the fabric of young black males."
This is a racist belief.

it benefits some...not so much others; benefits include jobs in the inarceration industry, & reduced competition in the workforce on the outside

inarceration was a legal replacement for slavery- it says it right there in the 13th amendment if you think i'm making this up

i am a big proponent of personal responsibility, but i only expect this kind of talk from people who are ignorant;
either you are ignorant of history, unable/unwilling to process information in terms of cause & effect...or both;
criminalization of a segment of the population will beget more criminality;
but i'm pretty sure you don't study real american history...only the fox news kind
Was there not someone killed and another shot at Caribbean fest in Toronto, Canada last weekend?

from what i heard anyone killed was killed by a cop...
young black males have been taught by the powers that be that violence is the best way to get your point across & solve problems- it's what our supposedly civilized governments do to solve theirs;
young black males have not killed nearly as many people as the american & european gov'ts have (remember the jews of germany?)...but i'm pretty sure you won't claim this criminal killing is a part of their fiber

simple-minded reaction...
how come the euro-american settlers were rewarded for killing the native american populations & appropriating their nations' lands?
had those killers been put behind bars america & cananda would look very different right now, eh?...
Please, explain what a society should do with violent people? If you don't incarcerate them and keep them from killing others, what do you suggest?
criminals should be dealt with...but the social conditions that create such an extreme imbalance in terms of the demographics of the people who make up the criminal justice system should also be dealt with;
it is not enough to say "those black people are bad so if we full the jails up with them it is justified"...
no that is not enough; we have to look at practices which are biased;
for example the disparity in sentences for the same amount of cocaine--- why the cocaine in crack form gets a much stiffer sentence than the cocaine in powder form...oh wait- the cocaine in crack form is more likely to be a black individual...in cases like this & others there are inherent injustices that add to the problem

how convenient you list the troops killed but not the iraqi civilians killed...LOL
murder is only murder when black males do it, eh?

Tell me this: Why are the two best-known 'crimes' in the Black community called 'DRIVING WHILE BLACK' and 'WALKING DOWN THE STREET WHILE BLACK' ?
It's because for years Racial Profiling has sought to fill the US jails with members of the Black Community. This is a national scandal!

Well said MsPeaches,
Being black and walking or driving on the wrong side of town at the wrong time of night is asking to be stopped just because of your skin color while this would rarely happen to a white person in a black area at the same time.
A majority of white people just don't experience this and so to them it is something they think is rare and don't think much about it at all.
Others just don't care about injustice when it is mainly black people who are on the receiving end.
If Bosnians are being slaughtered they send in NATO and the U.N.
If blacks in Somalia are starving to death (quiet violence) they send them their best wishes for survival.
