The wife of Bernard Madoff has severed ties with the disgraced Wall Street financier and not seen him for more than six months, it has been revealed.
Ruth Madoff, who has been married to the convicted fraudster for 52 years, has shunned her high school sweetheart as she allegedly seeks reconciliation with her son.
The 70-year-old was rejected by her sons Mark and Andrew after she refused to leave Madoff after his $65 billion failed Ponzi scheme was uncovered in 2008.
According to Madoff's biographer, Mrs Madoff has not visited her 73-year-old husband since their son Mark committed suicide in December.
'Ruth has not seen Bernie since Mark's suicide and I think the remnants of the family will now pull together,' said Diana Henriques, author of 'Bernie Madoff: The Wizard of Lies'.
'Ruth visiting him in prison was a major impediment to her being reconciled with them,' she told the Daily Express.
The couple met at high school in New York and married in 1959. Mrs Madoff worked on Wall Street before joining her husband's company and founding the Madoff Charitable Trust.
Ms Henriques, interviewed the fraudster, who is serving 150 years in Butner jail, North Carolina, as she wrote her book, which is published on Wednesday.
Madoff told the author that he was prepared to help the court-appointed trustee recovering money for victims of the massive fraud.
But, Ms Henriques said she is suspicious his motives. 'Madoff wants to look like he's trying to help the trustee but he's unwilling to participate in and help the ongoing criminal investigation,' she said.
The author said that Madoff was 'stunned' at how 'vilified' his family had become. She added that Madoff 'seemed like he didn't trust himself to talk about' his son's suicide.
Madoff admitted that he conned thousands of victims, including charities, banks, Hollywood stars and savvy financial players, into thinking he was investing their money properly.
Only a few hundred million dollars remained when he confessed to his sons in December 2008 that he had been operating a Ponzi scheme for about two decades, using money from new investors to pay returns to existing clients while financing a lavish lifestyle.
