'I love the UK': Valentine Simatchenko relaxes at home after the incident
The ‘have-a-go hero’ of the Notting Hill Carnival fears the nimble kick he aimed at a knifeman could result in him losing his disability benefits.
Valentine Simatchenko, 55, is worried the dramatic photograph showing him trying to trip the fleeing suspect could mistakenly portray him as fit and active.
The former Russian policeman said: ‘It is a big problem for me because I am disabled and this picture does not look good.’
Mr Simatchenko won public acclaim for his valiant action, but has shrugged off praise by insisting it was nothing compared with his experiences fighting the Russians in the Chechen War.
Siding with Chechen rebels in the bloody conflict, he said he saw a thousand people shot, and consequently was not afraid of the knife-wielding thug dashing past him after carnival reveller Rio Andre, 20, was stabbed on Monday evening.
Yesterday, as Mr Andre remained seriously ill in hospital, Mr Simatchenko was keen to play down his heroics, saying: ‘Nothing happened. I did nothing really.
