WESTERN BUREAU:
Almost two years since the Westmoreland Parish Council initiated its metered-parking system, the local municipal authority has begun to reap the benefits to boost their revenues.
"From the period of November 2009 to March 2011, we earned $2.8 million from the metered-parking system," according to the council's director of finance, Ulit Wright.
Wright explained that the monies would be spent in the township, as there is still a long way to go to improve the system in order to capitalise on its long-term benefits.
"Because the system is relatively new, there are still hiccups that have to be dealt we and, most importantly, not all citizens have bought into the concept of paid parking, so we still have that challenge," said an optimistic Wright. "Nevertheless, we intend to continue out efforts to improve the system and sensitise the public as much as possible."
Mayor urges cooperation
Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar Bertel Moore used the opportunity to urge residents to cooperate with them.
"It is only $50 per hour for the metered parking and so we want persons to come on board and just cooperate. It benefits the city at the end of the day, as the revenue generated will be pumped back to areas that need developments in the parish," Moore appealed.
The St James Parish Council led the charge in setting up a metered-parking system to generate revenues and control the use of road space within the township. This was also replicated in the town of Falmouth in Trelawny.
While St James has suspended its system to facilitate a reorganisation effort, which Secretary Manager Winston Palmer explained was to facilitate a better one for customers.
"We are currently restructuring whereas we are changing the contractor who was dealing with the metered-parking system, so it is suspended to facilitate that process. We want to ensure the system is more efficient for our customers who have to use the facility," Palmer noted.
A specific date for resumption was not outlined; however, he said the public would be informed accordingly when service would resume.
