Hadvice Needed - Serious Replies Only Please!!!!!

So mi sit dung at me desk tedeh an tek a long look around at wha gwan roun ya soh. 37 out of 50 peeps let go over the last couple of years. Mi doan know how much longa it will be before my tun a come.

Mi wuk at dis ya place fi almos 25 years now. It is di publishing biz but like we all know dis is a dyin propasission.

So mi wonda. Stick around here an wait fi get "packaged out" which in my case would be a little ova one years wages. OR! Should mi stawt look fi supem else and if mi lucky enough, jump offa dis sinkin ship and lose out on my severance pay.

What fi do?

look around....afta 25 years on the job it mite mean u r up in the years...finding a job in this time of soooo many unemployed youngsters might not be as quick as u would think....wait fi u money as u might gwine need it as a buffer....

look around discreetly (not sure how incestuous your industry is)

maybe have a confidential consultation with a head hunter. If you find something ask to be the next packaged out.

Not sure what you do, but if you are on the technical (non-sales side) you could look at teaching in a polytechnic school

depends on ur age etc etc...if ur over 50 or close to it wait fi ur pay out. in di mean time send ur resume to Wendy so she can pretty it up and keep ur eyes peeled. maybe even apply fi a few jobs so u can get a field for wats available. Go to the interviews and see wat a gwane. i have been known to go for interview even wen i wasnt actively looking and not really planning to leave my current job. I believe in leaving ur options open. the good thing about being in a job is you can afford to be picky.

now i am sure that did not help one bit bcus i am telling u to stay and leave all in the same breath. good luck. some ppl wid sense and experience will come advise u.

My job is rather specialized and with the publishing biz in the decline getting another related job would be next to impossible. So some re-training will be needed. here in Ontario the government has a program in which it will re-train &quot;older&quot; workers who meet certain requirements but you must be unemployed to be considered. This training is supposedly for jobs that are in demand. So i guess i have to wait 'til mi get mi pink slip before mi mek a move.

are they likely to go under and you have to walk with nothing anyway?

Mi agree with the others. Stawt look but stay. If/when yuh fine sumting, hawks fi a pakkijj. Nutt'n nuh sweeta dan having dat cushion inna di bank while yuh gettin paid by a new, exciting and more interesting job.

Nuh matta wat, unless yuh reddy fi tekk a serious break or sit it out til dem time here nexx year, DON'T leave til yuh fine someting else.

Life is more exciting when yuh nuh kno wat lies round di nexx cawna, suh make your nexx move an adventurous one.

Hey Rich:

I kind of doubt they will go under anytime soon. If I am told to go I will probably leave with a decent package.

They moved much of our work over to India a few months back but they kept a few of us around to oversee the transition and to keep an eye on the quality. Well as it turns out, the Indians are doing a bang up job for the most part. So little by little they are weeding us out. So the company is making money.

In the meantime save money to smooth the transition and work on getting links in places you want to go after.

If you want a full career change, I'd start on the degree/course/retraining now.
