Don't hinge your hopes on this program. Yes, there is no denying that being 50+ is a definite hurdle these days.

Do you know if the package would include retirement benefits? BTW packages (at least in the USA) are negotiable. After 25 years of service, if they offer you a package that you do not think is fair, you can make a counter-offer.

There are attorneys that specialize in employment law and some that focus primarily on package negotiations.

You can start researching what your package options may be and of course next steps depend on what you find, especially if a retirement plan is a possibility.

Like others mentioned, you can of course start looking. Sometimes people are surprised at what they find. In any case, best wishes to you. I hope things work out in your favor.

Milo - stay put and wait eh out let them 'show you the money. After 25 years or so you will get a nice severance package and like Pepper say you might even be able to negotiate. Good thing about you is that you in Canada not the US as I am sure your SS and pension are quite stable and you wont have to worry. I am a 'mature' worker also and I too am waiting out my employer as the package will be 'sweet' and I know that they are waiting for me to quit but they have to 'fork lift' me out as Rich D sey - with unemplyment benefits for 1 year plus the severance package that will comein handy for a few years of cat food.

Hey Rich:

I kind of doubt they will go under anytime soon. If I am told to go I will probably leave with a decent package.

They moved much of our work over to India a few months back but they kept a few of us around to oversee the transition and to keep an eye on the quality. Well as it turns out, the Indians are doing a bang up job for the most part. So little by little they are weeding us out. So the company is making money. </div></div>

In that case i would try to wait it out while at the same time preparing for my next move...courses etc.

Start looking into retraining/courses now. Cost, duration of course etc. What areas
of publishing are still done in house etc ??? What's going on with Ebooks/EPublishing ?? Research, research...research. So that when the time comes you will be prepared. See if there are free courses being offered around and take them NOW as this can be an opportunity to network wih others in your field. Same with volunteering.

Thanks again to all of you. Yes, i have been paying in to a retirement plan for all those year and it could go a long way in buying no name , low grade cat food.

Yes, the whole e-book thing has taken a huge chunk out of our bizniz so the move to India was a good way for the company to stay profitable I suppose.

Maybe I can look for work over in Bangalore?

Another sinking ship.. just not as obviously underwater as the ship you currently on..?

If you are thinking of branching off into your own endeavor, then ..Thats something I'd strongly reccommended.. But just swapping one JOB for another.. I dunno bout that.

I have worked for myself in the past and it was rewarding back then fi tru. Maybe if I start out with something small and make it a part-time gig for the time being and then if my company shows me the door it can become more of a full time thing. Great idea!

You may do very well in Bangalore considering your english is mildly accented and easily understandable. Team leader interfacing with the contracting companies?
