I have a question

I just got back from Ocho Rios after having not been there for about 4 years. To say that the loss of the business of the Royal Carribean cruise line to Falmouth has devastated Ochii is an understatement. My question is does anyone have friends or relatives with first hand knowledge of what the GAIN of the new pier and cruise ships is having on Falmouth???? I'm just curious,,,,such a tiny little town I am wondering how it is handling all of this.

Also, if the reason for the change was the famous Ochii hassling of cruise ship peeps, can't the harrassers just move to where the people are docking now???

The feeding frenzy that occurred at the Ochi craft market when cruise ships pulled in was total mayhem. I can't imagine why anyone would want to pay thousands of dollars for a cruise only to be subjected to that onslaught.

Is Falmouth going to be any different? Unlikely!

I take it you have never been to Falmouth? When I say been, I mean gone through the town up and down the streets, etc.

From what I know having taken the cruise and docking at falmouth,the town isnt ready for the cruise liners,there is nothing there for the tourist once you get off the pier,falmouth is badly in need of some tender loving care,and that is putting it mildly.
On the ship I sailed on (freedom of the seas) excursions are offered away from falmouth,martha brae,dunns river,great house,and a couple others I cant remember.
Me and my family actually went to porto seco beach a few miles up at discovery bay.
I am sure Famoouth may see some slight gains from the cruise liners,but I believe this is minimal,although I believe that royal caribbean has plans to help improve the infrastructure of falmouth during the next few years.

While tourism and Ocho Rios will never die, harrasment is seriously crippling Jamaica.

While the authorities claim to be against the harrasement, its as if they encourage the hustling under the quiet..
Check Dunns River, try leave the falls.. The authorities seem to design the place so that patrons have to walk thru the &quot;craft market&quot;, where its as if you are being fed to lions..
Notice how all 40 dozzen vendors are selling practically the same items?

Milo about the last link you gave me. (and thank you for them by the way), did you read the comments of the cruisers??? Ouch and double ouch.

I don't know what they were thinking other than let's find the sleepiest little out of the way town and maybe it won't be like Ochii.

No Pepper I haven't walked around Falmouth much. Went to a bar there and hung out when I stayed at Silver Sands, but the bar belonged to the mother of the driver and he was only interested in getting us there to drop a couple of bucks.

I heard about Bend down market day but never attended it.

From what I am reading it is new town same old problem. Thanks for the input.
I can tell you that the loss of that business has devastated Ochii, it is like in one serious coma.

OK, just read the first two articles and I see the &quot;big meeting&quot; was the day I left. Maybe I should have stuck around to attend it.
As I was out and about, the hilarious thing is the drivers who got ahold of some tourist off the ship in Falmouth drove them right back over to Ochii to do things, cause ain't nothing in Falmouth.

I wonder whats preventing the development of entertainment and attractions in Falmouth??
Its obviously not from lack of resources..

Maybe that planned Dolphin Cove mega development will make a difference..

It's on the way. My seat mate on the plane is the man who designs the M'villes and he was there to work on the Falmouth one. As someone mentioned I am sure another Dolphin Cove will go up there (poor dolphins), and all the other usual stuff, some gem palaces and bric a brac shops and a blue mountain coffee shop and devon ice cream. you know, the usual.

This is the first thing to happen in Falmouth in maybe 50 or more years. Seems like everything that 'happened' took place in Mobay or Ochi. Everyone bypassed Falmouth, seems like even their own elected officials did as well.

Buildings are dilapidated, and even the ones that are sound haven't been painted or received regular maintenance. You know when you pass through a place and its been a while there is almost always that 'oh, that's new, that wasn't there last time I was here. And BTW, what happened to the thing that used to be over there? or My how the place has changed&quot; Those phrases would never be uttered by someone re-visiting Falmouth...at least not until recently.

So to answer what you originally asked, of course something of this magnitude will have lots of impact on sleepy Falmouth.

What will happen in Ochi? There is plenty Jamaica to go around, the government and private leaders of Ochi will have to figure out how to wheel and come agen. But they will have to come good, Falmouth has lovely north coast beaches and is closer to the airport.
