it's typical uncivilized behavior by the 'whites' who have not yet been treated for the primitive disease of racism...
they do it everywhere- especially in european soccer matches- australia- anywhere a bunch of "whites" or "caucasians" (like india or arabia) gather you may get something like this;

at least the american blacks know it when they see it...

I agree with jahyout. This guy is a moron or is playing one on the ice.

Unfortunately though, he is no different form many who choose to stay under the rock when the problem does not personally affect them, and will even crawl out every once in a while to jeer the victim or tell them that they are liars and just have difficulties dealing with oppressors.

Of course they are the ones who will grab the banana and eat it when the rock hits them in the head and probably grin in the process.

I can't think of a logical reason for white people not to be racist.
Their empire was built on exploting the rest of the world's peoples.

Anyway, on a serious note, you have to understand the psyche and the power dynamics.
These days, white people may say hi and smile but they still go to bed comfortable in the thought that the systems which govern their lives were created by their race.
This is why so many hate Obama, not because of his policies -- since he goes out of his way to be anything but a black president -- but because he is the stuff of nightmares.

Black people, existing under the rulership of their enemies for several centuries, don't realize how much the thought of an inversion terrifies white people.
You see evidence of this also in the West's panicked reactions to China's growing economic power and influence in Africa and elsewhere.
As a culture, the white/Western sense of pride and completeness COMES FROM its domination over others.

These silly little things like banana throwing and monkey faces etc. are just another way to get that high.
It is a form of intimidation not unlike lynchings, church bombings, or cross burnings of past eras.
When whites perform those rituals they get to bask in the power asymmetry while disheartening those who need to interact with them to survive.
Black people do not have equivalent rituals that they perform in front of whites because it wouldn't have been useful in a slavery or post-slavery context.
In fact many have been busy trying to become white as a way to access some privileges.
