This is no surprise to me. Canada is not that different than the US. After all, both were originally colonized by Great Britain, rapist of the world. My g'father was Canadian, born in Toronto, and an ice hockey player. He told me he had been called ni**er more times than I had hair on my head--and he was not recognizably black.

Anyway, on a serious note, you have to understand the psyche and the power dynamics.
These days, white people may say hi and smile but they still go to bed comfortable in the thought that the systems which govern their lives were created by their race.
This is why so many hate Obama, not because of his policies -- since he goes out of his way to be anything but a black president -- but because he is the stuff of nightmares.

Black people, existing under the rulership of their enemies for several centuries, don't realize how much the thought of an inversion terrifies white people.
You see evidence of this also in the West's panicked reactions to China's growing economic power and influence in Africa and elsewhere.
As a culture, the white/Western sense of pride and completeness COMES FROM its domination over others.

These silly little things like banana throwing and monkey faces etc. are just another way to get that high.
It is a form of intimidation not unlike lynchings, church bombings, or cross burnings of past eras.
When whites perform those rituals they get to bask in the power asymmetry while disheartening those who need to interact with them to survive.
Black people do not have equivalent rituals that they perform in front of whites because it wouldn't have been useful in a slavery or post-slavery context.

That kind of revolt is interesting.
But much of this looks like personal catharsis for the slaves and was designed to occur unda bakra nose without dem really understand it.
However, when white people burn crosses/churches, or lynch an lef di mutilated body hang up, use racial slurs, throw bananas, or mock in black face etc. it's for others to see, understand, and be intimidated.
So in that sense I think it's different.

In modern times many participants may not be thinking that deeply about the rituals but that's the way their culture works and successive generations follow through.
Black people are not the only targets: Indigienous Americans have to deal with seeing themselves as white-invented caricatures all the time.

I think Western culture finds it necessary to dehumanize the races it has done wrong to.
Why is a whole other story but I think it has to do with sanitization of the past.

IMO...Still....when all is said and done, In our day here and now...compared to US I think I'd still choose Canada to grow my kids all over again. They are now 21 &amp; 23 both born here. It is different. Very. It is different all over. I find <span style="font-weight: bold">life harsher but more Inspirational in the US</span>. I've been here (Canada) all my life (maybe not as long as you) ..came from Jamaica as a babe. But half of my family lives in NYC. I was called n**ger many many times. Starting in Grade 1. It was so common I couldn't go a day. There was a marked change as I matured and the people I was surrounded by matured. haven't been called that name or any other derogatory racist slur since 7th grade. in the 70s. <span style="font-weight: bold">If it's behind my back. I couldn't care less</span>. Frankly if it's to my face, I still don't care. So I'm good. ...the social group we are a part of probably has a lot to do with it also queen. Also I think there is a difference between the treatment of male and female here too. I'd still like to cut outta here for Australia though. 30years in one place would drive anyone nuts. daggit. time to move on...! (sorry for jabbering).

I've never been called ni**er to my face by a white person; but then, maybe I presented myself as someone who would whup an a$$ if needed(and I would). Today, I want to retire to someplace warm and realistically inexpensive with good healthcare. I have negated Jamaica, although I love the island, because returnees seem to be victims of jealousy and violence at the hands of those left on-island. I've been looking at Central America, but they have <span style="font-weight: bold"> MONKEYS</span> (which I hate) and <span style="font-weight: bold"> POISONOUS SNAKES</span>, neither of which Jamaica has. I love Jamrock, but I want safety and good healthcare.
