a lot of the comments in the gleaner feel golding's defence of dudus was his undoing. he appeared to put the interests of the don above the interests of the country.

tufton seems to be the most favourably touted to replace bruce. tho there's some sense the old guard that still has a lot of influence wont support new, relatively untested blood.

as wahalla says, portia simpson is also in the position of being seen as past her time, and needing to follow bruce's suit.

Edward Seaga, former Prime Minister and Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), says Prime Minister Bruce Golding's declaration to step down is of little significance and mere talk.

Despite Mr. Golding's announcement on Sunday, Mr. Seaga says the situation could change.

&quot;He has only signaled his intention, nothing (has) happened, they must wait until they know something is going to happen. I’m an old politician, I know how these things run … I’ve been there and I know nothing is certain until it is certain. As far as I’m concerned, wait and see,&quot; he said.

His stepping down certainly quiets some attacks on his party going into the next elections.
It's probably a good political move for the JLP since Golding's involvement in the Dudus affair would have been so much campaign fodder.
They'll still feel the heat because of that but at least the DRIVA who took responsibility for most of it won't be the centerpiece.
