Confirmed: Son of CEO of the Registrar General's Department shot dead

The son of Dr. Patricia Holness, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Registrar General's Department, was shot dead on the outskirts of Spanish Town in St. Catherine Monday night, September 26.


Reports are that 19-year old Brian Holness, who lived at St. Jago Place in Hampton Green, was among friends on Windsor Road when loud explosions were heard.

It was later discovered that Brian had been shot in the chest.

He was rushed to the nearby Spanish Town Hospital where he died.

The police have not established a motive for the killing.

Dr. Holness is presently out of the country but indications are that she will return today.

Police investigators say there are indications that Bryan Holness, the son of chief executive officer of the Registrar General's Department, Dr Patricia Holness, was accidentally shot and killed while with a group of friends who were playing with an illegal firearm.

This account emerged yesterday after the St Catherine police detained one of the three men who was in the group who they believe is the &quot;prime suspect&quot;. The other men were questioned and released.

&quot;We are picking up that this was an accidental shooting. They were playing with a firearm and it went off,&quot; one investigator told The Gleaner yesterday.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Contradictions</span>

This contradicts the initial report given to investigators that the 19-year-old, a student of the University of the West Indies, was killed when a lone gunman riding on a bicycle fired a single shot into his parked motor car.

The main suspect will again be questioned by investigators, who are also trying to locate the firearm involved in the incident.

Holness was killed on Windsor Road, in Spanish Town, St Catherine, on Monday after dropping off a classmate.

The police, through their information arm, the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), said he was with a group of friends when an explosion was heard.

Shortly after the explosion, CCN said, it was discovered that he had been shot. He died while undergoing treatment at the Spanish Town Hospital.
