Yes Jah_Yout, It is not nice to call someone &quot;stupid&quot;.. I sure wouldn't to his face, but I'd likely say he is &quot;misinformed&quot; We are all most likely aware that these days, many have dual citizenships. With this as a fact with racial/cultural factors attached to it, how can anyone be so naive and flippant as to believe that their nationality is anything other than his or her own citizenship as stated in the passport?

The question of his &quot;nationality&quot; need not be asked because it's in the passport. But if asked, he should be aware of his nationality or the one he has assumed... In his case, he's an American citizen who may not have known it or playing &quot;cute&quot; by saying he is &quot;African&quot; American.. Can anyone imagine me landing in Jamaica and any immigration officer asked me my &quot;nationality&quot; after handing him/her my passport?

You know, I've read this whole thread, and I think the differences that have arisen, come from our roots in the Diaspora. Those of us born and bred in the USA (and yes, Canada too) were raised in a Euro-centric, caucasian environment for the most part. Every nuance of our society has been to the aggrandizing of European history. We never even learned about African, Caribbean, or Oceanic history, and only a smattering of Asian history. Consequently this partisanship has completely alienated me from learning more or traveling to Europe.

Then, in 1992, I went on an 8-day trip to the USVI. The doors of the plane opened, and I felt the humid air and smelled what could only be ambrosia. I walked down the steps onto the tarmac, and <span style="font-weight: bold">I WAS HOME!!!!</span> I had never been anywhere that was completely composed of people like me; people of <span style="font-weight: bold">AFRICAN</span> descent. I want to tell you, my heart litteraly skipped a beat. Our experiences as children are completely different. No matter educational advancement, no matter social/economic background, those raised in an environment composed completely of people who look like us, don't have the same outlook as those that were subliminally raised to feel shame about our non-whiteness. It was subtle, not direct. We were absent whenever positive images were presented. We were present whenever arrests were made. We drove flashy cars and lived in the &quot;ghetto&quot;. (The image)

Those of us of color who were born in the middle class, were made to feel &quot;different&quot; somehow. We &quot;talked white&quot;, as though that were shameful. If we preferred to have black friends we had to be like them, or we were not completely accepted, or accepted with trepidation. We were excluded from many of the activities of our peers, unless a generous spirit deigned to include us.

If you were raised in a country with a dominant black population, you looked like most of your friends, you probably talked the same, as did your parents. The t.v. and radio were full of people like you. You don't know how lucky you were. Jamaica in particular has/had class issues, but the color of your skin was not the only measure of your worth.

i carry more dan one passport and even wen using the US one to reenter the US i still ? the ?....i have never felt American...i have lived in American...i have always felt Jamaican...hence my querying how they r defining nationality vs citizenship..dat is the beauty of America at times...questions like dese confound some r at least mek dem pause.....if i profer a US passport n di US officer ask mi my nationality, it is a given he wants to know weh mi bawn....den again all the info in di passport r on dem screen...

case in point my last entry to Canada the lady asked me about the last work permit i had applied for...i said i had never applied for one in Canada...but then it occured to me that border crossings wid my US documents wen on tour had them stamp me with a work permit order somewhere in the system or i might have signed one at the border....but it shows how much info they have even as they ask u the ?s they do

if things were such as u describe in black nations, skin whitening products would not sell so hotly across the board in said nations...u forget that natural socialisation was curtailed and hijacked by colonialism...Jamaica's shift to black pride was never a national movement until post Independence and even then slowly spread from Back a Yard to uptown....

even Michael Manley whose prose n mind i love , was himself an Anglophile...homelife was very European until he married Beverly who introduced him to even Jcan cuisine...the average sufferah would never have believed dat of Joshua

we rarely describe them as a color (i've heard 'yellow')...i know most jamaicans call them chinese..more time we used to call every east asian 'chiney'...my point is they are described on sight from a perceived geographic origin...
yet some of us have a problem with doing the same for africans/blacks...

you make it seem like the majority of 'black's use skin lightening creme...that is not true; blacks were racially denigrated by the most powerful people on the planet at the time, so it can be seen that a vertain level of self-hatred coulda gwaan...
and that is not to say there aren't 'white' people getting constant dark tans, lip &amp; buttock enlargement, etc...asians getting eye-lid surgery, on &amp; on...
