Watched this documentary many years ago. Just had to revisit it as a friend is interviewed in it and wanted to show someone who he was... This forced me to rewatch the documentary.. Its as provogative now as it was when first watched it years ago..

Its a long documentary, suh a few short sesctions are highlithed that will take no more than 5 mins to watch each.

Short answer: Meat (Beef) not sure on a comprehensive level, BUT from a grass roots level, I know people who's had been in the business for years, or some who used to raise cows to subsidize their living (my ole man was one), but had to stop as they could not compete with the imported stuff.
As for Dairy industry, its common knowledge that industry all but died in Jamaica as not only the domestic market turned to the imported powder, but the large producers like Nestle and others abandoned the local farmers and turned to the &quot;cheap&quot; imported chemical powder..

I'd also be interested to know more about the cancerous meats being imported and consumend by the people..

but most j'cans would rather watch shebada or something like that before they would watch this film;
the truth is too painful

all real stuff, but not part of the present day political discourse in jamaica...
the current j'can model is unsustainable, yet totally ignored by ones in position of power &amp; influence...
this, my friend, is why i have such little respect for the j'can politicos

i don't think you have looked into what is going on in Jamaica very deeply if you view is that these issue are totally ignored by those in power.

They might not be getting the results you would like to see but to say that they are ignoring it is misleading.

I challenge Jamaicans, that the next time they have a &quot;movie night&quot; and want to share a little about Jamaica to thier new Canadian or American friends.. Instead of filipin on &quot;Harder They Come&quot; or &quot;Shottas&quot; or any Jamaican musical or comedic dramas or documentaries,... Sit them down, and without a drink of alcohol, let them watch Life and Debt..

my observation is that Jamaica has become VERY dependent on imported goods, whose prices have steady risen out of the reach of the common people over the years.
I remember seeing baby sized IMPORTED cabbage in a Supermarket in Jamaica (tropical climate 365 days a year) for MORE than I spend for a MAMPY SIZE cabbage here in Canada (artic cold 5-6 mths a year).

last time I was in Jamaica, I was shopping at the SuperPlus in Portmore Pines..
Suh, first went to JNBS to get some cash out mi account.. Took out enough to buy a weeks supply of food, plus some rum bar money, some splurging money, gas money, some money fi pay a bredren fi cleanup a place and some <span style="font-style: italic">&quot;leff something wid mi nuh&quot; money..</span>skip next door to Superplus supermarket.. pickup a few things.. The kids pickup a few of their treats..

As mi cashed out, mi eyes catch the register totaling up to mi expected limit with half the stuff still in the trolley..

Before yuh sey who-dat, the running total pon di cash register fly past mi budget.
Yuh waan see mi eye a get wider and wider as the girl punched in the totals..
Suh mi kids catch the rake (cause dem know me and mi “Dad pon Everybody Hates Chris” ways..) and just start take back dem treats to the aisle..
Even then, we still spent almost ALL the money I had withdrawn..

By this time the JNBS did lock up, only serving who already in, but good think mi know smaddy whey work deh and dem let me in fi draw MORE money..

What has changed I’d say is the “real” HIGHER cost of the initially cheaper imported goods are now hitting the people.. This is exasperated by the fact that the local competition that would have brought prices down was eliminated in the 90s when many local farmers were ran out of business by the then cheap imports..
We took the bait, “hook-line-sinker”..

one positive thing that are slowly catching ground in Jamaica is meatless monday..

but the reality is jamaica should go to ital eating because most of those provisions are produced locally and slow down on the fast food thing. I know it is a major paradigm shift but we have to look at who is supplying the packaged goods and the health of those who eat it in their country.

Will go rewatch Life &amp; Debt this weekend.
