Standing in the Visa on Arrival queue at Addis airport, I got talking to a couple. She's from Kansas, he's Canadian. They came to adopt a baby.

They pointed to another couple in the queue who were also coming to adopt.

What also struck me was they were only about 30 years old - early thirties max.


Salam said that hospitals tell the mother that the baby died and the child disappears.I'm not saying it's always like that and I doubt if that young couple knows about those runnings.

Adoptions of ethiopian babies to foreigners is not uncommon (think of the famine in the 1980's that got the movement started) but knowing how these babies are considered available is a big problem. Adoptive parents don't know. They are told if an available child. Follow the money and u will find who is doing the bribing at the hospitals and child care centers.
