JHTA concerned about privatisation of Dunn's River

The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), says it is concerned about the government’s move to privatize some of the country’s tourist attractions, including the popular Dunn's River Falls in St. Ann.

At yesterday’s post Cabinet Press briefing, Minister with responsibility for Information Senator Arthur Williams, said a contract had been awarded to Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu regarding the privatisation of the entities which are being run by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC).

The contract is valued at $29.3 million.

Senator Williams said the privatisation would allow the UDC to get back to its core business.

However, JHTA President Evelyn Smith said more details should be provided on the terms of the contract.

The other tourist attractions to be privatized are Reach Falls in Portland, the Two Sisters Cave and Fort Clarence Beach in St. Catherine, Green Grotto Caves in Trelawny and the Laughing Waters bathing beach in St Ann.

Bloody Bay Hotel Developments Limited that operates as Breezes Grand Resort and Spa, in Hanover will also be privatized.

do we really understand the waste and glut that occurs when a govt agency the likes of the UDC supposedly manages these attractions on behalf of the govt/people?

my only fear is that they put them out of the reach of regular jamaicans..as long as that is protected have at it

valid concern.. especially having noted the ridiculous cost of a few popular attractions (Mystic Mountain for example)..
however, while a couple people I know personally would be directly affected (most likely negatively) by the privatization of Dunns River, its been a feed through for political activist and party faithfuls....
