I am proud of this story that was aired on 60 Minutes this past Sunday. It features <span style="font-weight: bold">Dr. Freeman Hrabowsk</span>, President of my Alma mater University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) 
What makes me swell with pride about this story is that I have a personal connection with this University and Dr. Hrabowski. I remember when I first met him in an elevator and was star struck by his awesome presence!!!! But what a personable person he turned out to be! He engaged me in a conversation and when he detected my accent he asked me where I was from. Upon learning I was Jamaican, he made me an offer. He said to me if I maintained a 4.0 GPA just in my first year, I should come see him about a scholarship. The scholarship he was referring to was a scholarship designed for students with Caribbean Heritage.
I did get that scholarship as he promised and went on to serve as an adviser to him when I became the President off the Caribbean Student Association. Now I URGE you to please watch this video. In light of the Penn State scandal, you will see a school and a President that is NOT ABOUT FOOTBALL! He opted NOT to bring football to UMBC, but instead brought activities to the school that challenged students. He made it cool to be smart at UMBC. Students excel in chess and other sports that required brain power.
Under Freeman Hrabowski's leadership, the University of Maryland Baltimore County has become a powerhouse in math, science, and engineering. What I love about Dr Hrabowski is that he tries to know every student who attends the college. If I went back there today he would know my name and everything about me. He is that kind of a leader.
