A Brooklyn public school is making sure none of its students walk home alone after a parent was shot dead nearby last month.
Administrators at PS 150 in Brownsville will be walking groups of children home from their school on Sackman St. to make sure they stay out of harm’s way. The program — dubbed the “Walking School Bus” — is slated to hit the road every Friday afternoon .
“<span style="font-weight: bold">We hear gun shots on a regular basis during the day and after school</span>,” said Principal Pamela Bradley. “We want to make sure that students go straight home without being harmed.”
Bradley — a second-year principal — said <span style="font-weight: bold">when mother of 12 kids, Zurana Horton, was shot and killed almost two blocks away on Watkins St. last month</span>, she told school staff members to organize the children and walk them home.
So far this year, there have been 25 murders and 74 shooting incidents in the area, according to NYPD statistics.
From now on, roughly 60 students in the K-5 school will be split up into groups depending on where they live, and ushered home by a teacher or school official every Friday. The streets seem to get more dangerous on Friday nights, especially now that the day is shorter, Bradley said.
“We don’t always see the police presence in the area, so we wanted to make sure that we were the presence,” she said.
Tiffany Baker, a school administrator who remembers hearing the shots that killed Horton, said she will be walking 20 students home — which includes stops at six different housing projects.
“It’s my duty. Some of these kids are my neighbors,” Baker said. “When things go on in this neighborhood, children can panic and I never want to see any of them get hurt.”
Parent Kimberly Key-Green said she must use a wheelchair so Baker will be walking her son, Amir, 9, home.
“I’m very worried, especially now that it’s getting darker soon,” said Key-Green. “Now, I’m 100% relieved. I know he is safe.”
Amir, who admitted he’d be scared walking home alone at night — said he was glad to have Baker as his chaperone.
“I feel safe,” said Amir. “[Baker\] is helping me and <span style="font-weight: bold">she’s risking her life for me</span>.”
