See what Snopes says about Black Friday.
Black Friday isn't the biggest shopping day of the year in terms of money (going from being 'in the red' to 'in the black')... but in terms of the most amount of traffic - humans through the doors of stores.
The whole big shopping day thing started because large numbers of people had the day off from work, and had nothing to do. No football games, many types of businesses closed. These people had nothing to do, so retailers opened their doors and tried to drum up business for the upocoming Christmas holiday sales. </div></div>
