How could someone be dead for 3 years and no one notices.. very haunting



On 25 January 2006, officials from a north London housing association repossessing a bedsit in Wood Green owing to rent arrears made a grim discovery. Lying on the sofa was the skeleton of a 38-year-old woman who had been dead for almost three years. In a corner of the room the television set was still on, tuned to BBC1, and a small pile of unopened Christmas presents lay on the floor. Washing up was heaped in the kitchen sink and a mountain of post lay behind the front door. Food in the refrigerator was marked with 2003 expiry dates. The dead woman's body was so badly decomposed it could only be identified by comparing dental records with an old holiday photograph of her smiling. Her name was revealed to be Joyce Carol Vincent.

Yes that is the part that got me too. It is as if she left them and did not make contact at all

probably didn't know how to contact her. The article mentions a boyfriend that isolated her from her family and a shelter for domestic violence victims.

interesting story.. was there a book written about this? I see that a movie is coming out based on her life.

If my sister

a) left me with no contact information
b) did not call me or other close family in a while

and I checked all known sources for her whereabouts with no leads, then I would report her as a missing person to the local police.

But that's just me.

maybe the isolation occurred over time, and in their eyes she made it clear that she didn't want contact.

would be good if the author of the piece spoke with them to find out why they didn't try to find her.

The TV was on for three years. So that means electricity, right? Presumably no bills were paid during that time, so how come the power wasn't turned off?

What about other bills? Rent? If that was unpaid after even six months, doesn't the landlord take over the apartment?

I don't get it.

I saw on the site that her family did try to find her, with no success.

Very sad.

P - I dont think it was a conspiracy. This is an unusual situation but it's happened in the past. It's not the first and wont be the last that someone has died alone and isolated and no family or anyone knows of it.

The woman lived in a bedsit.

This is a British thing. There's nothing <span style="font-style: italic">exactly </span>like it here in America but think of it as something like someone here in the US living in public/subsidized housing - where utilities are paid in bulk, of sorts. That is, you don't have to write out a check every month to the light company.

That would be why the power was still on.

What's so sad is that I know 2 Jamaican men right now that could someday be in a similar circumstance.

One here in NY, his family don't want too too much to do with him. If you ever see where im live - baxcide. He's a bit of a social outcast in some ways - he has speech impediment and is somewhat the black sheep of his family. I think they see him as an embarassment. He's not had a regular paying job in about 17 years and exists on odd jobs; washing cars, cleaning carpets ...

I have a family member in England, from him leff jamaica, in the 60s mi nuh think him guh back.

I always wonder what going on with him.

I didn't even have his address when I was over there.

Yes.

The closest thing I can think of that's the same here, would be like an SRO - single room occupancy places.

The living quarters are very small. Smaller than a studio apartment. Sometimes bathrooms are shared.

Most people in bedsit usually keep to themselves - you don't want to know your neighbors too tough ...
