Mr Witchy and I were talking about the way the use of the term "Caucasian" has, over time, been misapplied to mean anyone "white" on the way to a local diner for supper.
Our waiter turned out to be Armenian, still a heavy accent, and we noted his accent - and correctly identified it as from the right part of the world - and asked him exactly where he was from. We got to chatting. Our waiter, Armand, told us we were right, that he was from the Caucasus region, that he was Armenian.
Armand told us when he first came here (to the United States) and began applying to colleges, he was pleasantly surprised to discover a checkbox for "Caucasian". How wonderful is this great country, America, he thought, that it should have a checkbox even for my small and insignificant part of the world! lol He found out later that it really meant "white". Mr WItchy and I roared with laughter. Hadn't we just been talking about this very thing?
Armand is still confused as to why Americans think "Caucasian" means "white"...
Mr Witchy tried to explain that it really was the fault of the 19th century Brits and their odd ideas.
This entire episode just reminded me of the beginning of the book Anything Can Happen by George Papashvily. I read it, years and years ago, in a Russian translation from it's original Georgian. I have no idea if there is an English translation or not, but by now there might be.
