J-FLAG wants PNP to prioritise buggery law review

The Jamaica Forum for Lesbians All-Sexuals and Gays (JFLAG), says it is expecting the new Government to prioritise human rights issues.

In the December 20 leadership debate, PNP President, Portia Simpson Miller said her administration was committed to the protection of human rights.

Simpson Miller also said it was time for a review of the buggery law, saying she believed the issue should be put to a conscience vote in the parliament.

The executive director of J-FLAG, Dane Lewis, said the group expects the new government to stick to its commitments.

The church has rejected Simpson Miller’s suggestion for a review of the buggery law describing the proposal as the promotion of a homosexual agenda.

I predict that well before the end of the PNPs term the law will be repealed - as it should be. Morality issues aside - states really should not legislate behaviour between consenting adults. The problem I have is when foreign groups donate money to local political parties to influence the political process. The PNP says it never happened. But if the money was routed by international groups through J-FLAG it is the same difference. I also predict that pride marches will be a regular feature of the Kingston landscape before the PNP term ends. Blakk, yu ready fi march :-).

Comrades will then claim that they are the progressive party - just flowing with the times and brand the labourites as dinosaurs. Even more money will flow into their coffers giving the comrades the resources they need to hold power indefinitely. If Portia goes all the way don't rule out a J-FLAG lobby for PSM as national hero - liberator of oppressed minorities.

My bet is the Comrade Government will not to this with even a long mascara stick.
The Lawyers Christian Fellowship is a Comrade Organization flush with funds they and the Church will mount such a fight Portia will wish she had just side stepped this question.

Election is over, no one will loose their jobs over this so the typical Comrade Organizations and grass roots poor that would fight for the Comrades on morality issues are now free to prevent them for changing the law to suit Gays!

Portia was the one who brought up the buggery law in the debate - it was not a direct question from Dionne Jackson Miller. It was the most direct, clearly formulated response Portia gave to any of the questions asked of her. That tells me there are people in her inner circle who are serious about having an up or down vote on it and I believe all they will need is 32 yea votes for it to come to pass.

I don't think the Comrades cared one ilk about the law, I think it was campaign ploy to stab drew in the heart, since Mr. Golding had neatly sidestepped the expected showdown.
In any case even if there is a Gay-Agenda in the 2012 PNP Administration, they will have to contend with others and unless they don't care about bringing the country to its knees (see Dudus), then they can go ahead.

Given the attitude to homosexuals, I hardly think a gay person would stop off at Jamaica on a gay cruise.. All it would take is a simple google search with &quot; gay Jamaica&quot; and they would run screaming from the room in a high pitched effiminate manner... Hardly conducive to spending enough money to rescue our economy....(could not help not indicate the traditional imaged not the image of the Scared Band of Thebes or Nyam Nyam warriors)

Not really Wahalla.

That's the whole reason for a gay cruise to<span style="font-weight: bold"> go</span> there - to confront the issue - to shed light on (what is seen as) the problem - to chip away at the hate and show the discord.

Little by little and even water will carve a stone.

Of course my husband's head will prolly bust in two ... !

Jamaicans do not hate gays...Jcans do not appreciate show of affection in public...dat is y we decry the dancehall moves wid di bed an di men a jump off pon di women...y we decry the dance whe di women a show dem baxide wid men behind dem gyrating...y we will decry an ugly man dressed up to be an ugly woman....if u looked good crossdressing noone would know u were a man...n dere is nothing pleasing about a muscle bound man mincing in him step r dressed up in female clothing....if u r a man who likes men then both should look mannish...
