Fraud uncovered at JFJ
Local human rights group, Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ), has been hit by a major fraud.
A senior employee at JFJ has been charged with stealing more than $2 million from the coffers of the organisation.
Tamika Smith, who was employed as a supervisor in charge of Administration and Accounts, appeared before the Corporate Area Criminal Court on Thursday [January 5] to answer to fraud charges.
Ms. Smith was charged last month following an investigation by the Fraud Squad.
It is reported that from August 2010 to July 2011, Ms Smith, who was in charge of preparing the payroll, prepared fictitious documents, claiming to have made payments of two-point-one million dollars in salaries to an employee of the organisation.
However, investigators say she lodged the money in her personal account and pocketed the money.
JFJ uncovered the fraud late last year and called in the Fraud Squad.
Ms Smith's $300,000 bail bond was extended until January 24.
