white guy gingrich is a candidate is a candidate who went to a church to seek votes from a black congregation, and faced some difficult questions about his position. i wouldnt necessarily say he was &quot;accommodated&quot; in the sense of &quot;embraced&quot; or his differing opinions tolerated.

smiley, as guest speaker for the mlk celebratory event, would have been expected to set the tone of the event with his remarks. many people would have felt nervous that he would affect their enjoyment of the event based on his known positions. i don't get from the article that they wanted him to change his opinons, but they felt that wasnt the right platform for them.

i think the difference in speaker/audience expectations of each event is what distinguishes them. i actually see the two occasions as apples and oranges. </div></div>
